Global 2012: Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes to Divorce: The Signs Were There

Tom Cruise & Katie HolmesTom Cruise & Katie Holmes (Photo credit: Wikipedia)Last week, Tom Cruise took daughter Suri and son Connor to an awards ceremony in New York. Meanwhile, Katie Holmes was on the other side of the planet in Taiwan. The official reason was to promote an ice skating event.

Now that Holmes filed for divorce on Friday, according to People, Holmes' Taiwan trip seems more like a warning sign than anything else.

In recent months, the couple was rarely photographed together, even when the two were in the same city. Back in New York this week, Holmes was photographed all over town with Suri, wearing matching outfits, going to see the movie Brave, eating ice cream, all without Dad.

Tom, also in New York, was busy filming his new movie Oblivion and wrapping up his promotion of Rock of Ages. Even though he credited Katie for his interest in doing Rock of Ages (and apparently gave her his bejeweled codpiece), she didn't show up at the movie premiere.

What has been spotlighted, particularly in the Daily Mail, is Holmes' recent style. The usually impeccably dressed actress has been photographed looking like, well, a down-to-earth mom. Untucked button-downs, jeans, loosely wet knotted hair -- none of which would raise alarm bells unless you were a superstar known for a meticulously managed makeover since her marriage began more than five years ago.

According to Life & Style, the couple hadn't been spotted together since early April. (Bear in mind, the publication also claimed Holmes was pregnant again.)

The magazine points to their very different lives, as Cruise traveled around the world hopping from film projects, and his wife stayed under the paparazzi microscope with daughter Suri, working on smaller projects.

But another stressor on the relationship could stem from Cruise's devotion to Scientology -- it's long been blamed for his split from Nicole Kidman -- and the serious allegations of his mistreatment of lower-ranked members of the religious group, as this New Yorker article pointed out.

If Holmes thought her marriage to a superstar would be a boon to her career, she was wrong. Since their union began about six years ago, her professional life has taken a backseat to being a wife and mother. That may have been her choosing, but a recent interview with Cruise in Playboy suggests an unsettled Holmes.

Cruise praised Holmes' creative endeavors but also inadvertently hinted at a marked distance between them. "One week I said to her, "You've been up in the middle of the night. Is everything okay?" She smiled and then threw this thing on my desk and said, "I wrote this script."

Consider the fact that her husband, a producer, didn't notice she was writing a script, and the idea that he hadn't questioned her latenight busy work until it was done, and it paints a picture of a less than intimate union.

It also suggests Holmes wanted more from her career than just being known as a superstar's wife.

It's something Cruise's second ex-wife, Nicole Kidman, was all too familiar with.

When asked in an interview with Vanity Fair whether women could have both marriage and career, she said of her marriage to Cruise: "I think I had to choose. I think (the marriage) would have come down to it. I suppose it wasn't meant to be."

Global 2012: ‘Avengers Vs. X-Men’ shakes up the Marvel Universe

Avengers (comics)Avengers (comics) (Photo credit: Wikipedia)
It was bound to happen. Marvel Comics’ two most powerful—and now most popular—super teams are being pitted against each other in an earthshaking, moneymaking miniseries event. “Earth’s mightiest heroes” and “the children of the atom” fight over a cosmic entity in “Avengers Vs. X-Men,” a biweekly, 12-part series running until September.

The two teams are fighting to control an earth-bound Phoenix, an ancient being with power to eradicate planets. The Avengers go after the teen mutant “messiah” Hope Summers, the potential Phoenix host. But the X-Men are keeping the other team from taking her into protective custody, believing that Hope can use the Phoenix to restart the mutant race, most of which was magically depowered by the ex-Avenger Scarlet Witch.

Co-written by Brian Michael Bendis, Ed Brubaker, Jason Aaron, and Matt Fraction, “Avengers Vs. X-Men” is the comic book event of the year for Marvel devotees, an epic crossover that will have a definite winner (although at this point, the victor is clearly Marvel; the main book is a hit and related titles are doing really well).

So far, the miniseries impresses with its big, foreboding confrontations, although there are some disappointing continuity inconsistencies with the tie-ins. The Avengers’ Helicarrier was attacked by Magneto and Colossus (AVX # 2), but in another book (New Avengers # 24), there are no signs whatsoever of that attack, and shows an entirely different scenario.

Five issues into “Avengers Vs. X-Men,” something totally unexpected finally happens, which will undoubtedly lead to more brawls and escalated conflicts between the super-groups.

Art-wise, John Romita Jr. surprises with tighter-than-usual illustrations, but his work looks rushed by issue 4. Olivier Coipel will take over penciling duties by issue 6.

It’s far from perfect, and knowing the whole story requires reading several other connected comic books. But whether you’re an X-Men or Avengers fan, or both, “Avengers Vs. X-Men” is good old-fashioned comic book fun, accessible enough for newbies, but more rewarding for longtime fans of the Marvel Universe’s premier teams.

Global 2012: Kentucky becomes first team to produce No. 1, No. 2 picks

As if John Calipari needed any more recruiting ammunition after back-to-back Final Four appearances and a national title this spring, the Kentucky coach got some Thursday night.

The Wildcats became the first program ever to produce the first two picks in an NBA Draft when the New Orleans Hornets selected Anthony Davis at No. 1 and the Charlotte Bobcats nabbed Michael Kidd-Gilchrist at No. 2.

The closest another program has come to pulling off that feat is UCLA's 1969 national title team, which produced the No. 1 and No. 3 picks in Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Lucius Allen. Only 11 other teams have even had two top five picks in the same draft including Calipari's 2010 Kentucky team that had John Wall and DeMarcus Cousins go at No. 1 and No. 5.

"Somebody told me they are going to call it the Blue Room instead of the Green Room," a beaming John Calipari told the Louisville Courier-Journal.

New Orleans' selection of Davis was about as surprising as a star quarterback being named his high school's prom king. The 6-foot-10 All-American will immediately provide shot blocking and rebounding for the Hornets and should develop into an offensive threat too as he becomes more comfortable in the NBA.

Kidd-Gilchrist going No. 2 to Charlotte instead of either Florida's Bradley Beal or Kansas' Thomas Robinson was a bit more surprising. The versatile 6-foot-6 wing defends at least three positions, pushes the ball in transition as well as any player in the draft and has a reputation as a relentless worker, all attributes that will help a Bobcats team that was among the worst in league history last season.

Having Davis and Kidd-Gilchrist go back-to-back at No. 1 and No. 2 is the highlight of what should be another banner draft night for Kentucky. The Wildcats produced seven first-round picks and two second-rounders in the first two years of the Calipari era and had another six players drafted Thursday night.

It's debatable whether Kentucky even had the best draft among all college teams, however, since North Carolina had four players go in the first 17 picks. Harrison Barnes went No. 7 to Golden State, Kendall Marshall No. 13 to Phoenix, John Henson No. 14 to Milwaukee and Tyler Zeller No. 17 to Cleveland (via trade with Dallas).

Global 2012: Rafael Nadal shocked at Wimbledon by world No. 100

Español: Rafael Nadal, en el torneo ATP de Tok...Español: Rafael Nadal, en el torneo ATP de Tokio 2010. (Photo credit: Wikipedia)
To quote the late Jack Buck, "I don't believe what I just saw."

World No. 100 Lukas Rosol stunned two-time Wimbledon champion Rafael Nadal 6-7 (9), 6-4, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 in one of the biggest upsets in the 135-year history of the tournament. Nadal had made the finals in his last five Wimbledon appearances and had played in the last four Grand Slam finals overall. He was 17 days removed from winning the French Open.

The 26-year-old Czech is playing in his first Wimbledon. He was 0-5 in qualifying matches at the All England Club and had never won a single ATP match on grass courts since joining the tour in 2005. He had 19 wins in his career. Nadal had 41 this year. But behind a powerful serve and fearless returns, Rosol took Nadal deep into a first-set tiebreaker, then refused to fold after dropping it 11-9, winning the next two sets after early breaks.

The players exchanged a testy moment in the third set. A frustrated Nadal complained to the chair umpire about Rosol's antics before his serve. The Czech was dancing on the baseline and making a heavy breathing noise while Nadal prepared to hit. When Nadal's complaints were ignored, he sulked, then appeared to deliberately brush into Rosol on a changeover.

Nadal corrected course in the fourth set and appeared on his way to cruising to a fifth-set win when Wimbledon officials made the sure-to-be controversial decision to close the roof at Centre Court to avoid the impending nightfall. There was still at least 35 minutes left of daylight when the choice to close the roof was made.

After a 40-minute delay, the players returned and Rosol appeared to have regained his mojo. He broke in the first game and wasn't challenged on his serve the rest of the set. He hit 20 winners in the fifth and won the final game at love. When he hit an ace to cap the upset, Rosol fell to his knees.

The loss was instantly compared to some of the biggest upsets in Wimbledon history. Pete Sampras' loss to George Bastl in 2002 is considered the standard bearer, but that came at the end of the American's great career. Nadal is in his prime. Now he's out of a Grand Slam earlier than he has been since 2005.

Global 2012: Google reveals pint-sized Nexus 7 tablet for just $199

Image representing Google as depicted in Crunc...Image via CrunchBase
Google revealed its long-rumored device today — a 7-inch Nexus tablet running Android's newest operating system flavor, 4.1 Jelly Bean. The pint-sized slate — which the company showed off at its annual Google I/O keynote event — is manufactured by Asus, known for making other Android tablets including the Transformer and the Transformer Prime.

The device has a 1280 x 800-pixel high-definition display, made with reading and watching videos in mind. It has a speedy Nvidia Tegra 3 quad-core processor under the hood, front-facing camera for video chat, 9 hours of video playback — compared to the iPad's 10-hour playback life — and 300 hours of standby battery time. The tablet weighs 340 grams, which is about as much as a paperback book. Check out our hands-on gallery with the Nexus 7 for all the eye candy.

It features tighter integration with Google Play, with content being front and center, similar to how the Amazon Kindle Fire functions. Due to this, Google Play now has a new 3D magazine app with tablet-optimized articles that render well on the Nexus 7's screen.

Nexus 7 will also be the first device that ships with Chrome as its native browser — Chrome, despite being Google's browser, hasn't been available on Android until a beta version of it was introduced for Ice Cream Sandwich devices. Google has also overhauled Google Maps with additional information and review features which can predict which restaurants you'll likely enjoy. Offline maps will also be a hotly sought-after feature, and now that Apple and Microsoft are touting similar features, it's an important bullet point to have.

Pre-orders for the teensy Google Nexus 7 tablet begins today. You can order the new tablet from the Google Play store with two price tiers — $199 for the 8GB model and 16GB version — making it a true Kindle Fire competitor. It will start shipping in mid July. The Kindle Fire lands at a similar price point, but with its apps governed largely by what Amazon declares suitable for its shop, the Nexus 7 will have everything the Fire has, and then some. Despite some similar hardware specs — screen size, screen resolution, etc — the Nexus will offer a faster processor and a much more genuine Android experience from a software standpoint.

Google is clearly making a play for potential iPad customers with this sleek, streamlined device, and with a price tag of less than half of the base model Apple tablet, the company may have a real shot at success. $499 gets you a 16GB iPad with a 9.7-inch Retina display, but if ultra-sharp screen resolution and playing in the Apple universe aren't a big deal, the 7-inch Nexus slate will be much easier on your pocketbook.

Of course, it's unclear how Microsoft's Surface device will shake up the consumer tablet market. With a physical keyboard and Windows 8-esque software design, it seems like Android and iOS devotees will already have their minds made up between the iPad and the Nexus 7.

Global 2012: Jenny McCarthy strips down for Playboy

English: Jenny McCarthy at E3 2006.English: Jenny McCarthy at E3 2006. (Photo credit: Wikipedia)
Before she turns 40 this November, Jenny McCarthy wanted to strip down for another nude pictorial in Playboy — and here it is!

The single mom, who first posed for Playboy in 1993, was photographed by Steve Shaw for the eight-page layout in the magazine's July/August issue. This is her seventh pictorial for the magazine, and it's the sixth time she has been featured on the cover.

"I'm really proud of it," McCarthy told People. "The pictures are really gorgeous and classy. They could be out of W magazine. They're really elegant. It's probably a lot more sophisticated than a lot of the stuff you'd see of people with their clothes on."

McCarthy, who is dating Chicago Bears linebacker Brian Urlacher, has been vocal about her desire to appear on the magazine again before she turns the big 40 on November 1. "I figured [I'd do it] one more time before everything really falls apart. Why not? Evan's tuition was really expensive this year," she said on the "Today" show, referring to her 10-year-old autistic son.

Manila 2012: Ruffa: I quit!

Ruffa Gutierrez, Filipino actressRuffa Gutierrez, Filipino actress (Photo credit: Wikipedia)
What a birthday gift it was!

Last Saturday, June 24, in the Bulong ng Palad segment of the TV5 show Paparazzi, the hosts passed a whispered question that ended with the one supposed to answer it — Ruffa Gutierrez, that is.

The segment, once a feature of the GMA show NUTS Entertainment, is calculated to keep viewers guessing what the whisper is all about. It must have offended Ruffa, who was being given a birthday “tribute” that day, because she quit after the show.

“It’s my last day on the show,” fumed Ruffa in a text message to Funfare Update.

Her mom, Annabelle Rama, revealed in her Twitter account that the bulong revolved around the actors romantically linked to Ruffa, asking her to, well, “compare notes” and to rate their performance.

Short of calling the show “trash,” in her Twitter entries Annabelle lashed out at the show’s writers (alleged to be responsible for the question) and bombarded them with unprintables.

The Buzz,” said Ruffa, referring to her previous show on ABS-CBN, “never treated me that way.”

TV5 PR girl Peachy Guioguio promptly sent Funfare Update this official statement:

TV5 management is seriously concerned about the turn of events today at Paparazzi and is now looking into the incident. We promise everyone that we shall take appropriate action.

Perci Intalan, the TV5 exec in-charge of entertainment shows, texted the following message: To be fair to everyone, we will first have to review the segment with management, then decide accordingly. We will have to discuss the matter.

After a two-year hiatus, Serena and Venus Williams are bringing their sister act back at Wimbledon.

The Americans are entered in doubles at the All England Club, their first tournament together since losing in the 2010 Wimbledon quarterfinals. They won the Australian Open and French Open earlier that season, part of their 12 Grand Slam doubles trophies -- to go along with the 13 won by Serena, and seven by Venus, in singles.

The only official doubles match either Williams has played since 2010 was in the Fed Cup in February, when Venus teamed with Liezel Huber to help the United States to beat Belarus.

Global 2012: Josesito Lopez pulls off upset

English: Floyd Mayweather and Victor Ortiz dur...English: Floyd Mayweather and Victor Ortiz during thier press conference at the Hudson Theatre on June 28, 2011. (Photo credit: Wikipedia)
Unheralded Josesito Lopez stopped welterweight star Victor Ortiz after nine rounds Saturday night, apparently breaking Ortiz's jaw to earn a stunning upset victory.

Ortiz and his corner stopped the fight before the 10th round could begin when the injury left Ortiz unable to close his mouth.

Lopez (30-4, 18 KOs) leaped onto the ropes to celebrate one of the biggest upsets in recent boxing history, grinning and shrugging his shoulders at the cheering crowd at Staples Center.

"I knew I had to fight the fight of my life to win," said Lopez, a Riverside native who has never fought for a world title. "I knew the longer it went, the better chance I'd have. He hits hard, but I was never going to quit. I knew it was a close fight on the scorecards, and I knew I could press him more and more if I continued. He's like a tree. I had to chop him down."

Lopez accepted the fight last month as a late replacement for Andre Berto, whose failed doping test scuttled the eagerly anticipated rematch of Ortiz's unanimous decision over Berto in a tumultuous bout in April 2011.

Ortiz (29-4-2) was narrowly leading on all three judges' scorecards when he quit, but the former welterweight champion didn't dominate as expected in his first bout since getting stopped by Floyd Mayweather Jr. last September.

Although Ortiz repeatedly tagged Lopez with shots throughout the bout, producing swelling around both of Lopez's eyes, Lopez repeatedly replied with big shots of his own -- and he even taunted Ortiz with come-at-me gestures, thrilling the crowd.

"I'm a man, and I'm not intimidated by anything," Lopez said. "I have a big heart. He tried to intimidate me, but it didn't work. Victor has no heart."

The upset is an enormous setback for Ortiz, who hadn't been in the ring since Mayweather flattened him when Ortiz dropped his guard and attempted to hug the unbeaten pound-for-pound champion after a head-butt. Ortiz thinks he hurt his jaw in the fifth round, but wasn't certain.

Ortiz showcased his superior skill and power from the opening round, repeatedly putting Lopez on the retreat. Yet Lopez constantly found ways to respond, either through counterpunching or his own strong shots to Ortiz, who has never been a defensive technician.

Lopez used his longer reach to pick at Ortiz, who occasionally showed frustration in a clinch. Ortiz also hit Lopez with a rabbit punch in the back of the head, earning a caution from the referee and the jeers of fans.

Global 2012: Kristen Stewart Tops 'Highest-Paid Actresses In Hollywood' List

Kristen Stewart beat out some of Tinseltown's most revered stars to earn the title of "The Highest-Paid Actress in Hollywood."

Forbes ranked Stewart above the likes of Cameron Diaz, Sandra Bullock, Angelina Jolie and Charlize Theron -- women almost more than twice her age who have been in the business for decades. At only 22, Stewart is already earning $12.5 million per "Twilight" film.

How does she command such a hefty salary?

"At this point, could anyone else play Bella Swan in Twilight?" asks Forbes' Dorothy Pomerantz. "Probably not; if the studio tried to switch in another actress, fans would revolt. So for the last two "Twilight" films, Stewart has been able to demand an estimated $12.5 million per film, plus a share of the profits."

Between May 2011 and May 2012, the brunette beauty raked in $34.5 million, earning more than "Twilight" co-stars Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner.

Just one year ago, Stewart ranked at No. 5 on Forbes' "Highest-Paid Actresses" list, tied with movie vet, Julia Roberts.

Forbes compiles its list through the consideration of factors like upfront pay, profit participation, residuals, endorsements and advertising deals. Agent fees and expenses were not factored in.

Although Stewart is raking in the dough, she seems completely unaffected by her celebrity.

"You can Google my name and one of the first things that comes up is images of me sitting on my front porch smoking a pipe with my ex-boyfriend and my dog," Stewart told Vanity Fair contributing editor, Ingrid Sischy, in July's cover story.

The photos of Stewart smoking were taken by paparazzi in 2008, when the first installment of "Twilight" was released and the young actress was thrust, unprepared, into the spotlight. In the photos,Stewart sits on her front porch in gray sweatpants and a white tank top with her hair thrown into a messy ponytail and a black pipe in her hand. Subsequent photos showed Stewart smoking.

"It was [taken] the day the movie came out. I was no one. I was a kid. I had just turned 18. In [the tabloids] the next day it was like I was a delinquent slimy idiot, whereas I'm kind of a weirdo, creative Valley Girl who smokes pot. Big deal. But that changed my daily life instantly. I didn't go out in my underwear anymore."

She might be one of the most popular and highest-paid young stars, but she still faces her share of criticism. Lucky for Stewart, she wears armor that no critic can penetrate.

Global 2012: Lebron James and Gisele Bundchen... Dream Team?

Biography of a model. Gisele BündchenBiography of a model. Gisele Bündchen (Photo credit: BarbieFantasies)In case you don't already know, LeBron James is basketball right now. He's the man up, as they say, and in his case, he goes up and up and up. King James (or the Chosen One), as they call him, became Rookie of the Year in 2004, then led his Cleveland Cavaliers to back-to-back playoff runs in 2006 and 2007, and the team's first-ever finals appearance in 2007. Last season, he averaged 27 points per game. Do you remember Michael Jordan? Well, LeBron is Michael Jordan, on a bigger scale (as in, bigger guy). What he lacks in pure Jordanian grace—rather than soar, LeBron seems to descend on the basket—he makes up for with strength and a dazzling sense of symmetry. Proportion is everything when it comes to King James. If you've ever sat in the stands as he brings a crowd to a points-induced frenzy, you know that for LeBron the crossover—that dexterous shift in direction, from one side of the court to the other—happens almost imperceptibly. His overall balance is apparent to his trainers, to his coaches, to sports fans, and, especially, to Rachel Johnson, who pays attention to his body for a living. "In my mind," says Johnson, his stylist, "he's not big at all, because even though he's tall and muscular and gorgeous and all of that, he's very well proportioned—the top half of his body and the bottom half match. To me, I'm dressing a man who's five feet eleven."

At 250 pounds, he is a towering six feet eight, but when not in the heat of competition, he somehow manages not to tower—so says Gisele Bündchen, the LeBron James of fashion modeling. "He doesn't really make you feel small, even though he is big," says Gisele, who, although she'd seen him play, and although her boyfriend, Patriots quarterback Tom Brady, is a friend of his, had never met LeBron. "I think my leg is like the size of his shoe," she adds. Aside from a few shared attitudes—"She's all about business, and she's all about fun," LeBron says about Gisele. "That's why she's the best; she has fun while she's doing it"—they both admit that high school sports made them who they are. "What sports teaches you is not only respect for your body but that you have to be aware of your body, that you have to work with other people," says Gisele, who as a girl was an ardent volleyball player. "If you feel good, you play better, and if you feel better your self-worth will increase every day."

During a recent practice, LeBron looks and feels good, and in one of dozens of shooting drills, all goes well as he sinks ball after ball. And then—a bad shot, a little off. As the next ball reaches his hand, he pauses, just for a millisecond, as if hitting the reboot button. Next shot, and all the ones following—dead on. "It's all about refocusing yourself," he explains. "For me, it's such a habit, and I know what I'm doing out on the basketball court, so if I do something wrong, then I know how to switch the switch and turn it right back on, to readjust myself. Right there and then. It doesn't take me a day. It takes me just"—he snaps his fingers—"one play."

Just in time for summer, here's some news that may give vacationers pause before jumping into the water at Cape Cod beaches: Great white sharks are also paying a visit.

The massive sharks have returned to the area over the years, and last summer shark sightings led to several beach closings.

According to WBZ-TV, the State Division of Marine Fisheries was alerted to their presence when electronic receivers detected audio signals on two of seven sharks the state tagged in the same area last year in open ocean about half a mile from the Chatham shoreline.

Like many tourists, the sharks are coming for the seafood. The sharks were detected near Monomoy Island, where a tempting seal population has attracted the great whites in recent years. A shark researcher for the state of Massachusetts noted that he had seen seals with sharks bite markings on them as recently as Wednesday.

The beaches will remain open. But if swimmers want to keep from getting their own shark bite markings, here's a common-sense suggestion from shark researcher John Chisholm. "Don't swim with the seals. That's really all we can say. It's their ocean."
