Global 2012: What successful people do in the morning

Pepsi logo (2003-08). Initially, the "Pepsi" script was written across the top of the globe. In 2007 when the packaging was again redesigned, the script was moved below the globe. It was used in countries outside the US until 2010. (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

The day may have 24 hours of equivalent length but author Laura Vanderkam says not every hour is created equal. Drawing on her own research, surveys of executives, and the latest science on willpower for her forthcoming ebook What the Most Successful People Do Before Breakfast, Vanderkam argues that making smart use of the early morning is a practice most highly successful people share.

From former Pepsi CEO Steve Reinemund's 5 a.m. treadmill sessions, to author Gretchen Rubin's 6 a.m. writing hour, examples of highly accomplished folks who wring the most from their pre-breakfast hours abound in the book. What do they know that the average entrepreneur might not have realized yet?

"Seizing your mornings is the equivalent of that sound financial advice to pay yourself before you pay your bills. If you wait until the end of the month to save what you have left, there will be nothing left over. Likewise, if you wait until the end of the day to do meaningful but not urgent things like exercise, pray, read, ponder how to advance your career or grow your organization, or truly give your family your best, it probably won’t happen," Vanderkam writes. "If it has to happen, then it has to happen first," she says.

But what if you're a night owl by inclination and you go pale at the thought of setting the alarm for even five minutes earlier? Vanderkam explained to Inc.com that there is hope for nearly everyone.

"Around 10% to 20% of folks are confirmed night owls. Screwing up your schedule is not wise for these folks--and they may have to choose professions and ways of working and ways of dealing with their families accordingly. Everyone else is in the middle--and my thesis is that there are real advantages to training yourself toward the lark side," she said.

And luckily, you don't have to rely on sheer force of will to make the switch to earlier mornings (though some of that is, no doubt, required). In the book, Vanderkam lays out a five-step process to help you make the change with the minimum of pain:

Track your time: "Part of spending your time better is knowing exactly how you’re spending it now," writes Vanderkam, who recommends you, "write down what you're doing as often as you can and in as much detail as you think will be helpful," offering a downloadable spreadsheet to help.

Picture the perfect morning: "Ask yourself what a great morning would look like for you," suggests Vanderkam, who offers plenty of inspiration. Shawn Achor uses the early hours to write a note of appreciation. Manisha Thakor, a personal finance guru, goes in for transcendental meditation. Randeep Rekhi, who is employed full time at a financial services firm, manages his side business, an online wine store, before heading off to work.

Think through the logistics: "Map out a morning schedule. What would have to happen to make this schedule work? What time would you have to get up and (most important) what time do you need to go to bed in order to get enough sleep?"

Build the habit: "This is the most important step," writes Vanderkam before explaining how to gradually shift your schedule, noting and rewarding small wins along the way.

Tune up as necessary: "Life changes. Rituals can change, too."

Global 2012: How does Arena of Empire Defense 2 (Android game) work?

Image representing Android as depicted in Crun...Image via CrunchBaseBelow are some of the basic guidelines on how the popular Android game, Empire Defense 2's Arena's ranking and power are determined:

Reputation:

1. Your arena standing is determined by your reputation.

2. You can increase your reputation by defeating players with a higher arena standing than you. The greater the difference between your arena standings, the more reputation you are awarded.

3. If you challenge players with a lower standing than your own, your reputation will decrease. The amount of reputation deducted is determined by the difference between your respective arena standings.

4. Naturally you will also lose reputation if you are defeated by a player with a lower arena standing than you. The amount deducted depends on the difference between your respective arena standings.

Arena coins:

1. Defeat rival with higher rank than you will get 10 arena coins

2. defeat rival with lower rank than you will get 0 arena coin

3. loser will get no areana coin

Power:

1. Power determines who wins or loses in an arena battle. After a battle, the player with the greatest power wins.

2. Your power after an arena battle is determined by how many waves of enemies you survived, how much HP your hero had left, your number of units, and how much gold remained unused.

3. Your power will begin decreasing at a rate of 5% per hour if you do not enter the arena for six hour.

Crystals:

1. If you challenge and win against an opponent with a crystal symbol beside their name, you will be rewarded with their crystals upon winning.

2. The higher your rank position, the more crystals you will be awarded upon winning.

Global 2012: Secrets of Dating Women

Cover of "Secrets To Dating"Cover of Secrets To Dating
Have you ever noticed how most men make dating women much more complicated that it has to be? Are there some secrets to dating women that can help men achieve more success with women and dating, without being a manipulative jerk?

Simple answer: YES.

There are a few simple secrets about dating women that most men will never know. I'm going to reveal these secrets so that you'll be naturally become alluring to women. You'll also never need to worry about all the B.S. that most men go through with women and dating.

Here they are:

Dating Women Secret #1 - Treat her like a "maybe."

When most guys initiate a conversation with a woman, they have one thing in mind: get her phone number, or move things forward in some other way. However, there's a problem with this kind of thinking: the qualification step is missing.

Women are used to qualifying men. But when a man qualifies a woman, it reverses the male-female social dynamic, putting you in the driver's seat and giving you the power of choice.

Screen out the women that aren't right for you right from the start. Ironically, a woman is more likely to open up and show her warmer personality to you when you show her that she needs to prove herself to you first, not the other way around.

Don't skip this qualification step. It'll save you a lot of heartaches in the future. And will also make you a more challenging and attractive man in her eyes.

Dating Women Secret #2 - Date many women

Most of you probably love the idea of dating multiple women at the same time. And many of you probably also think that this is something that most women wouldn't tolerate.

Let's set the record straight. There is nothing wrong with dating multiple women as long as it's done in an honorable way, meaning that you're honest to the woman about what you want in the relationship. Of course, you don't have to directly tell her you're dating other women, but you don't want to lie about it either. So if she asks you if you have a girlfriend, simply say "I'm casually seeing other women, but I haven't found the right one yet." This also takes off the pressure from her.

Most women have no problem casually dating multiple men, so you shouldn't either. Think of this way: How are you going to find Ms. Right if you're not getting out there and dating a lot of women?

The only way to really know what you want in a long term relationship is to date as many women. This also creates a healthier attitude since you're coming from a mindset of abundance, rather than desperation.

Forget that nonsense that she is the "one." There are many beautiful, available women who are also looking to casually date many men as well. Don't jump into an exclusive relationship the second it becomes available. Instead, learn to be comfortable playing the field.

Dating Women Secret #3 - When it's time, move on.

One of the biggest mistakes guys make with dating women is staying in a relationship that they're really not happy in. If at any moment you're thinking that the woman is not right for you, then it's probably a sign that it's time to move on.

When you do decide it's time to let go of a woman, don't go back. A lot of guys will feel a little lonely after a breakup, and will want to get back into the same relationship to give it another shot. This is a mistake.

Do yourself a favor. If you decide to break up with a girlfriend and move on, then stick to it. Date other women. If after dating other women you still feel that she was the right one for you, then you can decide if she's worth pursing again or not.

Don't stay in a relationship for the sake of being afraid to be alone. It's just as good to be single.

Dating Women Secret #4 - Date different "types"

It's tempting to only date your preferred type of women. Maybe you're into blondes. Maybe you're into Asians. Or maybe you're into crazy punk chicks. Whatever your type is, keep in mind that the woman that is most compatible with you might not always be the type you'd expect it to be.

Learn to broaden your horizons. Date different types of women, meaning date different physical types, as well as different personality types.

It's amazing how some guys make it nearly impossible to find a great woman since they're filtering out nearly every woman since they don't fall into their preferred category.

Not only should you be dating multiple women, but you should also be dating different types of women.

There you go. Keep these 4 dating secrets in mind, and you'll live a much more fulfilling and satisfying lifestyle. Don't just wait for the right woman to come along. Sometimes in life, when you want something bad enough, you'll find a way to get it.

Manila 2012: Iza dating non-showbiz guy

My OWN work: Iza Calzado Digital Photomanipula...My OWN work: Iza Calzado Digital Photomanipulation using Photoshop CS3, .jpg format, created and submitted to http://www.deviantart.com on the same day: May 14, 2011. also being utilized for Iza Calzado's Facebook Page: http://www.facebook.com/izacalzado (Photo credit: Wikipedia)
Iza Calzado has a new inspiration -- a non-showbiz guy whose name and background she did not divulge.

“I’m dating someone,” she admitted at the press launch of Myra-E’s Holistic Skin Care campaign in White Space, Makati on Thursday, June 8 (Iza endorses the beauty product).

Iza added that one should always find time for  love despite a busy schedule.

“Kami (ni Eula Valdes), laging may time. Kahit lima pa ang pelikula mo at may play pa, masisingitan ng love life. Love makes the world go round,” Iza joked.

Does she prefer non-showbiz guys to actors?

“Wala din namang gustong magpadala sa set ko ng bulaklak, so okay lang. Wala namang nanliligaw na taga-showbiz. Walang lumapit,” Iza replied, tongue-in-cheek.

Even if she’s pushing 30 this year, Iza is proud of her age.

“I’m turning 30 this year and I wouldn’t trade this from being 20. Sobrang nae-excite ako kasi I feel so better about myself and I feel na I’m in a better place in most aspects of my life. But beyond that I’ve also been blessed with experiences and people that help me become better person.”

She has learned to accept herself and embrace my 'flaws'.

“Marami naman nakakaalam na I used to be big. It’s been really a struggle for me to embrace my flaws and everything,” Iza said.

Global 2011: How to Out-Smart the Outlets

A Vanity Fair outlet store located in Michigan...Image via Wikipedia
In reality, outlet malls promise something—high quality for a low price—that is very hard to deliver. The next time you’re tempted to swing through an outlet mall, consider these savvy shopping tips.

Look at apparel tags. Irregular or imperfect merchandise usually carry tags that are sliced, marked on, or otherwise altered to indicate that it’s not fit for retail sale, whereas knockoffs usually carry different tags altogether. At Gap Outlets, the tags are white with blue lettering, the reverse of the retail tags. At Banana Republic Factory Stores, the tags have three small diamonds indicating they’re not retail quality. Get familiar with real retail tags, so you can spot the impostors at outlet stores.

Know what an item is really worth. How can you know whether you’re getting a great deal at the Samsonite outlet if you don’t know the real retail price of a suitcase? Comparison shop for large purchases; don’t rely on the reference price quoted by the store.

Think seasonally. It’s a good bet that any in-season merchandise is from an outlet-only line. Real retail overruns don’t arrive in outlet stores until after the season has passed.

Remember that fewer stores = better quality. If you’re shopping at a store that has posts in every outlet mall in the country, you’re almost guaranteed to be getting outlet-quality merchandise. At an outlet with only a few locations, the merchandise is more likely to be true overruns, discontinued items, and last-season’s line because the company doesn’t have to fill hundreds of stores.

Shop the sales. Outlet stores have sales at the same times that normal retail stores do, and customers can often get even better discounts at these times. But sales at retail stores can offer savings just as valuable as regular outlet prices.

Global 2011: 5 Products I Gladly Pay More For

Several mobile phonesImage via Wikipedia
Being frugal isn't always sensible, at least not when you are spending extra money to replace the "bargain" item that doesn't work. I've found, in many instances, that it's counterproductive to buy the cheapest products, whether they're food, electronics, or clothing.

I am usually the queen of frugality. I make my own window solution with vinegar and water, re-use plastic baggies, and clip coupons. I still wear a classic wool skirt I bought in 1988 because intelligent purchases, I find, stand the test of time.

Here are the five purchases I am not afraid to spend more on, and how much I save by choosing quality and/or brand over price.

  1. Designer pocketbooks or wallets
  2. Health food and drinks
  3. Quality shoes
  4. Computers and cellular phones
  5. Kitchen appliances and tools

Manila 2011: What Men Find Sexy In Women

Woman with a "censorship costume" du...Image via WikipediaMen instinctively know a sexy woman when they see one, but what is it about a hot woman that oozes allure? These experts tell all about what's sexy to the male brain.

1. Dress
If you ask a man to pick out the sexiest dress on the rack, he'd probably reach for the skimpiest of the lot. Well, technically, he's right. But every woman wears a dress differently, and what looks sultry on someone else may not work well for you, or vice versa.

2. Lingerie
It's a scientific fact that men are visual creatures, says April Masini, author of Think & Date Like A Man, and one way to appeal to their visual side is lingerie.

3. Confidence
The thing that men (and women) find sexiest about the opposite gender is confidence, according to Shelly Hagen, author of The Everything Body Language Book. And this confident quality has nothing to do with beauty or looks.

4. Hair
A woman's hair is one of the sexiest female assets from a male perspective. And it doesn't matter whether you wear it straight or wavy, casually tousled or perfectly blown-dry -- men love your hair, and they love it long. "Socially, your hair is a cue that tells men about who you are," explains April Masini, author of Think & Date Like A Man.

5. High heels
Men's attraction to stiletto heels is undeniable, but heels are more about what a woman looks like in them than about the shoes themselves.

Global 2011: 5 tips for bonding with her better

A bar of milk chocolate for baking.Image via Wikipedia
Valentine’s Day: Celebration of love, or calculated plot to destroy romance?

Think about it: There’s nothing more romantic than a spontaneous outpouring of love. But that’s one thing you can’t have on V-day, when we’re all supposed to move in lockstep formation down to the jewelry/flower/stationery store. How about cozying up over an intimate dinner for two? Fugghedaboutit: Every restaurant in town is packed to the gills and about as romantic as the mosh pit at a Green Day concert. And what about being fit, healthy, and ready for lovin’? Good-bye, sexy body: There’s nothing like an enormous cardboard heart filled with carbohydrates to ruin the way your belly looks, and feels.

When it comes to chocolate disaster, temptation is everywhere. From the coworker who sets out a community bowl, to the aisles lined with sweets at your local grocery store, there’s no love for your waistline.

But I have good news: If you know what to look for and can exercise a little self-discipline, indulging your sweet tooth isn’t nearly as sinful as you might think. That’s why I’ve dedicated this post to arming you with the knowledge you need to enjoy a romantic evening, compliments of the new Eat This, Not That! and Cook This, Not That! books. Love Parade 2007 in EssenImage via Wikipedia
Let’s not kid ourselves. Getting older is a drag, and middle age is particularly fraught with tension.

Do the sexy clothes you wore in the past now seem just plain wrong? Will smoky eye makeup that looks great on 19-year-olds make you appear just plain crazy?

Part of the problem is that aging often requires change, but most women don’t want to move to a frumpy town called Middle Age, where sensible shoes and boring clothes are de rigueur.

Here are the 11 most common mistakes aging women make—and how to avoid them.

  • Not realizing you need to change
  • Not spending enough on your clothes
  • Comparing yourself to you in your 20s
  • Skipping exercise
  • Not getting enough sleep
  • Ignoring your teeth
  • Overdoing anti-aging efforts
  • Thinking there are hair “rules”
  • Using the wrong makeup

Exercise. Effective, yes. But also booooooring. I’ll admit it. So why not just do the latest diet fad, the one that promises faster weight loss with less effort? Answer: The pounds will come creeping right back. The better solution is to embrace those arguably “tedious” diet rules and make them more fun and inspiring—and with cool, new tools.

Here’s what I mean:
