Manila 2011: 5 Signs He's Not Really Into You

The plain red flag is often used at socialist ...Image via Wikipedia

There's a guy you totally fancy and whom you've been seeing for sometime. Yet there's something about him you can't put your finger on: He's kinda too busy with work, a tad too passive about your relationship, and not acting as besotted as he should be.

Or maybe he really isn't. It's a bitter pill to swallow, but better to know if he's wasting your time sooner rather than later. Here are five red flags that could confirm your doubts.

1. He's not trying to see you
Either he's the busiest guy on the planet or his sorry-I-got-to-work-on-weekends excuse is just that -- an excuse. How do you know for sure? Does he find time for his mates yet somehow not have time to meet up with you or talk on the phone? If the answer is yes, something is amiss. When it's always you who's doing the running, it's a clear indication that he's not all that committed to the relationship. "If a guy is into you, he will find time to make a call and catch up," says Lexi Proud, who is a dating expert for Arrange Me a Date.

2. You've not met his friends
It's not a good sign if he hasn't introduced you to his friends and family, especially after you have dated for some time. Just how long is too long to wait? Proud suggests asking questions if you've not met any of his friends by the three-month mark and if you've not met his family by six months. "If a guy is into you, generally they want you to meet their friends. After all, they should be proud to have you on their arm!"

3. He only sees you for sex
This is so painfully obvious that it's going to sound blunt. If this guy is only meeting up with you for a hook-up, he's only into your body, not you as a person. Get out, pronto.

4. He often lets you down
Does he frequently cancel plans you've made together because "something else" has cropped up? Be wary, especially if there's no reason for it, and if it's happening on a persistent basis -- it's a sure sign your relationship just isn't up there on his list of priorities.

5. He leaves you in doubt
Here's the simple universal truth about men: If a guy wants you, you'll know it. He won't leave you wondering about his behavior -- he'll call you, he'll ask you out, he'll want to be with you whenever he can. If all you get are lukewarm reactions from the guy, he's just not that into you. Period.

Global 2011: 10 Ways You Waste Money on Your Car

1953 Chrysler Imperial - detail of the air ven...Image via Wikipedia
With gas bills putting a crimp in your budget, you don't want to be wasting money on other car expenses. But many car owners do just that — either spending more than needed on maintenance or putting off work that will cost more later.

But while neglect doesn't work, neither does overspending. From Sadowski and Michael Calkins, manager of the AAA program that recommends repair shops, here are 10 ways you may be wasting money on your car.

1. Changing oil every 3,000 miles.
2. Using premium fuel unnecessarily.
3. Failing to change your air filter.
4. Failing to check the brake pads.
5. Buying mileage-boosting additives and devices.
6. Tune-ups for your engine or air conditioning.
7. Changing coolant.
8. Ignoring your check-engine light.
9. Buying expensive performance tires.
10. Paying for built-in navigation.

Global 2011: New Laws of Attraction

Mettons les voilesImage by bDom via Flickr
When it comes to finding love, there are certain truths that seem so irrefutable that any single person would be a fool not to follow them. Maybe you’re a firm believer that you can tell within seconds if you’re attracted to someone. Or, maybe you adhere to the idea that a first kiss says it all: If you feel fireworks, your date’s a keeper; if it bombs, cut your losses. While these romantic maxims have their fans, experts insist that these laws no longer hold true in today’s dating world. In short, many rules single people follow need a little revamping. To that end, we’ve consulted authorities in the field to bring you the most up-to-date tactics for finding someone you’ll click with.

Old rule: You can tell if you’re truly attracted to someone in three seconds
New rule: You can’t tell if you’re truly attracted to someone until you’ve had three dates

Old rule: Your mate must meet all the criteria on your “must-have list”
New rule: A “must-have list” looks great on paper, but paper won’t keep you warm at night

Old rule: Opposites attract
New rule: Opposites distract

Old rule: Your date’s record collection (or DVD library, or bookshelf) mirrors yours—so you must be soul mates
New rule: You want a person, not an iPod playlist

Old rule: Your first kiss should be a toe-curling experience
New rule: Your first kiss is inconsequential

Old rule: When it’s true love, you think about this person constantly
New rule: When it’s true love, thinking about this person makes you feel good

Global 2010: New Rules of Business Etiquette

The New Rules Of Business Etiquette

1. Knock before entering a cubicle.

Try to approach from within your colleague's sight line. Pause before entering her cubicle. Ask if now is a good time to talk.

2. Call or e-mail before you arrive.

Instead of making a beeline for your colleague's cubicle, get in touch in advance, and ask what would be a convenient time for you to drop by.

3. Don't leave voicemail messages when you know the person is out.

Midnight is not a good time to leave a voicemail or send a note. If you get a brainstorm in the middle of the night, write an e-mail and put it in your draft folder. Hit "Send" at 9 the next morning.

4. If you're the boss, don't send demanding e-mails on the weekend.

Unless your team is on a shotgun deadline, compose your instructions over the weekend, but don't send them until Monday morning.

5. If you get a weekend e-mail from the boss, you may take a day to reply.

You can't ignore a boss's weekend request completely, but you can wait 24 hours before responding. It's fine to set a boundary around your personal time.

Global 2010: 6 steps for writing a charming email

Email-me-buttonImage via Wikipedia
“Can I call you?” I asked.

Why don’t you email instead, was her reply.

Had I come on too strong? Was she one of those damaged, disfigured souls more comfortable in cyberspace than with face-to-face interaction? She was blonde and had a fetching smile, so I considered these questions for about 1/8th of a second.

“Sure,” I said. “No problem. Email is fine.”

Step 1: Wow ‘em with something cool in your subject line. Since it’s the only thing the recipient will be able to see in your email before opening it, your subject line had better be a lot more eye-catching than “Hello.” Try something more unique that relates to your last interaction with them. You both loved North by Northwest? Then your subject line could be “Eva Marie Saint...” That’ll get her attention. In the text of the message, begin with “She has nothing on you when it comes to charm and intrigue...”

Step 2: Make your email all about the other person. Enough about you and your life; the fastest way to impress someone is to focus on her interests. Your date’s a NASCAR fan? Then Jeff Gordon rules! And don’t worry, brushing up on these subjects with some quick research online is allowed, as long as you don’t overdo it (see point 3).

Step 3: Make yourself look good, but don’t make yourself into something you won’t be able to live with. She’s a red-state Republican and you stumped for Obama? Then “I respect the efficiency of the administration’s current operation” is okay. “All liberals should move to France” is probably going a little too far.

Step 4: Email is no time to bare your soul. Honest and self-aware is one thing; psychotic and confessional is something else. Here’s an example: “Watching the news, sometimes I struggle to make sense of a world gone mad and long for nothing more than the opportunity to love and be loved,” might be okay, even A-plus…if you’re emailing a grad student, that is.

Step 5: Keep it short. Sure, novel-length dispatches sent every hour, on the hour, show that you’re brimming with things you want to share, but they also say you have way too much time on your hands, or are just plain obsessive and creepy. Not a good message for someone you’re trying to woo. The wisdom of showbiz applies here: Leave ’em wanting more.

Step 6: Exit gracefully. When you’re signing off, err on the side of restraint. Better to leave someone wondering about your intentions than set off alarm bells with something too amorous.
