Global 2013: Women’s most romantic dates

Janelle

If you could package up all the elements of a romantic date and sell it, you’d make millions. Everyone wants an absolutely perfect, over-the-top experience that makes your pulse race, your heart swell, and your senses come alive — but it’s not that easy to pull off. The most romantic dates are often the result of alchemy; they combine good timing, planning, execution, luck and a little bit of magic to produce a memory that lasts a lifetime.

Recently, I asked women to tell me about their most romantic date memories. From viewing a spectacular sunset high above the city to boldly reclaiming romance after a lengthy illness, listen as these ladies let us in on the secrets that made these moments so unforgettable:

“My meeting with the boy next door in Paris netted us both a new relationship”
“I’d been looking forward to my overseas trip so much,” says Maryland resident Patricia, 32. “My friend Janelle and I had planned to visit Paris for three days and then take the train to stay with my sister in London. At the last minute, Janelle got sick and couldn’t travel. I was torn about visiting Paris alone. I didn’t speak French; Janelle’s fluent and was going to be our translator… but I’d already paid for both the plane ticket and the hotel, and my sister was expecting me in London. A little voice inside me said: Do it. It’s an adventure. You never do anything alone anymore. So off I went, and the first night, I was terrified. I felt very alone and troubled by the language barrier. As I lamely attempted to order lunch at a bistro in the Marais district on the second day, a man about my age who was eating lunch by himself while intently reading something on his iPad interrupted me. In perfect French, he told the waitress what I was trying to order. I thanked him and we started chatting. Turns out, he’s a teacher from Baltimore who lives 30 minutes away from me and happened to be visiting friends in France and Germany for a few weeks. He asked me if I’d like to have dinner that night, and I said ‘yes.’ He was really cute, we flirted up a storm, and all of a sudden during dinner, I just fell in love with Paris,” admits Patricia.

“After 15 years, I was reunited with my college sweetheart”
“His email came from out of the blue,” recalls North Carolina native Sarah, 39. “But there it was, a note from Jimmy (my college boyfriend) writing to see how I was doing, ask if I was planning to attend our 15-year college reunion, and also fill me in on the news that he was recently divorced. I’d been in love with Jimmy, but after college, we broke up and went our separate ways — me to New York City to work in the publishing industry; him to Raleigh, NC, where he opened a landscaping business near where I lived shortly after leaving New York. We had mutual friends and kept in touch [with each other] indirectly. He married and had two children; I didn’t, but I’d had a couple of long relationships, both of which were now over. But the idea of meeting Jimmy again at the reunion sounded too cliché to me; these things never work, and it’s always a disappointment because you can’t recapture the past.”

“Watching the sun set over Seattle made me feel like I was in a Hollywood movie”
“My most romantic date ever started with a picnic and ended high above the city, watching the sun set over Seattle,” says Mary, 28, who left her hometown in Oregon because she wanted to discover love and excitement in a big city. “I’d met Patrick online and we’d had two dates already. We decided that for date #3, I’d choose the first activity, he’d choose the second, and we’d surprise each other. I decided on having a picnic at Pike Place Market and brought a blanket, cups, utensils, and a basket so we could load up on goodies from the market and take them to a grassy area not too far away. It was so much fun picking out fruits, cheeses and breads with him, exploring, trying things, talking for hours on the blanket… then came his turn.”

“We found ways to reconnect on the road to nowhere”
“I’d gotten to the point where romantic gestures seemed rote to me,” says Washington native Suzy. “It’s Valentine’s Day, get the flowers; plan a dinner for the anniversary… nothing bad, but it was all just so expected. My husband Bill and I had been married for 15 years, and I think you get either lazy about connecting — or, in our case, acting a little too by-the-book. Bill and I had been working really hard for several months, and I think he knew I’d grown tired of being over-scheduled. Before my last birthday, he told me very cryptically to be prepared for a day trip. We dropped the two kids off at my sister’s house, and then the fun began.”

“Her joy in making me happy made this my favorite date ever”
“My girlfriend Melissa knew I’d been dying to see K.D. Lang, my favorite singer, in concert,” relates Tina, 38. “So she got two tickets to her Wolf Trap outdoor theater performance in the Virginia countryside. She took me to dinner beforehand, and she was more excited than I was, I think. Seeing my girlfriend so excited to do something nice for me was deeply romantic. It was a hot summer night, and we held hands during the show. Getting to experience a night with my favorite performer and my favorite girlfriend ever just made it over-the-top special for me.”

“Celebrating getting back to normal was the highlight of our marriage”
“I’d had an awful year, just the worst,” says Marylander Carrie, 43. “I’d had breast cancer, and the treatments — which took a toll on me physically and emotionally — ended in late January. I was not an easy patient. I wasn’t one of those tough chicks who grin and bear it. I was really upset, and my husband of 10 years bore the brunt of my anxiety (with 100% grace I might add). About a month after my treatments ended, I surprised him by getting all dolled up, making his favorite dinner, and opening a bottle of champagne like it was a combination birthday/Valentine’s Day celebration. It was neither, but it was my comeback! I felt strong and healthy, and I wanted to thank him for all he’d done to make that possible, all the dinners he’d made, and all the times he’d sat with me when I was feeling lousy. It was our most romantic date ever because we’d triumphed over something terrible and were able to smile, laugh, love and celebrate again… together.”

#5 Mark Wahlberg's Beverly Hills Mansion
Size: 11,500 square feet, including seven bedrooms and 10 bathrooms
Asking Price: $12.995 million
List date: July 18, 2012
Current Status: Still for sale
The Scoop: Wahlberg bought the home in 2001 for "only" $4.95 million and made some multi-million upgrades to the place, which now features a kitchen with commercial grade Viking-appliances and marble countertops, a media room with a fireplace, a two-bedroom, 2,500-square-foot guest house, and a resort-style pool area with cabanas and a waterfall. The estate includes a two-story gym complete with a regulation boxing ring and an outdoor basketball court that can also be used for tennis or racquetball. Though potential buyers should note that the deed to the house does not come with a guarantee you'll end up with Wahlberg's abs.

#4 Sheryl Crow’s Hollywood Hills Estate
Size: 11-acre estate with a 4-bedroom, 3.5 bath main house, a 3-bedroom, 3-bedroom guest house, and a 2-bedroom, 2-bath bungalow
Asking Price: $15.95 million
List Date: October 1, 2012
Current Status: Still for sale
The Scoop: The Spanish Revival home was built in 1924 and has been remodeled to include lots of modern-day amenities like a kitchen chock full of high-end appliances, a library with built-in bookshelves, a wine cellar, and plenty of outdoor luxuries, too, including some close-to-nature spots where Crow must have penned a few tunes. There's the infinity pool with attached hot tub and deck, a footbridge over the property, a cactus garden, and a tropical-style palapa complete with hammock for gazing out into the L.A. skyline, and an outdoor fireplace. As for the guest houses, which share the 11-acre lot, the 1909 Craftsman contains three bedrooms and three bathrooms, while the 1885 "cottage" has two bedrooms and features white oak floors and the always-cool-sounding claw foot tub. According to Zillow.com, the "Perfect Lie" singer and her kids have already completed their move to Tennessee.

#3 Madonna’s Manhattan Apartment
Size: 6,000 square feet, 6-bedroom, 8-bathroom duplex
Asking Price: $23.5 million
List Date: November 20, 2012
Current Status: Still for sale
The Scoop: Though Madge purchased a single unit back in the mid 1980s, over the years she's bought two more neighboring apartments in the building, combining them into what is now a 6-bedroom, 8-bathroom duplex, which takes up the 5th and 6th floors of West 64th Street's prestigious Harperley Hall. A peek at the listing shows the apartment offers luxuries most Manhattanites have to forgo, like great rooms on both floors with French doors leading to outdoor "Juliet" balconies, five wood-burning fireplaces, central air conditioning (not always a given in NYC apartments), bedrooms with their own wings, and yes, those priceless park views. The apartment was featured in a 1991 issue of Architectural Digest, and according to the article, it included a sound-proofed private gym so that neighbors couldn't hear the stereo system. Unfortunately, the plan didn’t quite work. According to the New York Post, the 54-year-old was sued in 2009 by an upstairs neighbor, who claimed that Madonna played her tunes so loudly that the walls shook for up to three hours a day. The building's board reportedly threatened to evict the "Vogue" songstress and she settled the lawsuit in 2011. After that she moved out of the building and into an even bigger apartment across town on the Upper East Side, this one a 12,000-square-foot 13-bedroom, 14-bathroom triple-wide townhouse with nine fireplaces (because five just isn't enough), for which she paid a reported $40 million.

#2 Adrienne Maloof and Paul Nassif’s French Chateau in the Gated Los Angeles Enclave of Beverly Glen
Size: 20,000 square feet including eight bedrooms and 11 baths
Asking Price: $26 million
List Date: September 20, 2012
Current Status: Sold on October 19 for $19.5 million
The Scoop: After entering into a messy divorce, “Real Housewives of Beverly Hills” star Maloof and her plastic surgeon husband Nassif looked to liquefy one of their biggest assets when they put this mega-mansion on the market. And what a mansion it is. The listing agency's website states that the French Chateau-style house, designed by architect Richard Landry, is set on two acres and includes luxurious features like a tennis court, media room, wine cellar, swimming pool, and both a pool house and a guest house. According to Zillow.com, the couple purchased the home (which was built in 2000 and has been featured prominently in the reality show) for just under $13 million in 2004, which means they made a tidy little profit on the sale … more to pay the lawyers with!

#1 Ryan Seacrest’s Beverly Hills Mansion, Purchased From Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi
Size: 2.87 acres, 15,000 square feet, 9 bedroom, 11 baths
List Price: $45 million
List Date: October 3, 2011
Purchase Price: $37 million
Purchase Date: May 16, 2012
The Scoop: Was the home with a celebrity pedigree worth every penny? Well, the property includes a main house, two guest cottages, and an additional 3-bedroom house. DeGeneres and de Rossi purchased the furnished property from “Will & Grace” co-creator Max Mutcnick and later bought two neighboring properties and expanded the home with the help of interior designer Melinda Ritz. The house includes a media room (where the couple was married), a giant pool, meditation room, and pond. Best of all, it was also was once home to Joan Collins.

Honorable Mention: Reese Witherspoon’s Ojai Ranch
Size: 7 acres, 4 bedroom, 3-bath main house, three guest cottages, and carriage house
Asking Price: $10 million
List date: October 15, 2012
Current Status: Price dropped to $8.9 million on November 15. Still for sale
The Scoop: Though there were bigger and more expensive celeb homes that hit the market in 2012, Witherspoon’s Ojai property, makes the list since it’s made plenty of headlines over the last year or so. It was the site of Witherspoon's star-studded wedding and was featured in Elle Decor's August 2012 issue. Over the summer it also became a temporary retreat for her friend and "Like Water for Elephants" co-star Robert Pattinson during the media frenzy that ensued after his girlfriend Kristen Stewart admitted to cheating on him. Acclaimed architect Neff designed the ranch's main house, which has four bedrooms and three and a half baths, in 1923 for glassware magnate Edward Drummond Libbey. In addition to the main house, the estate, which sits on nearly seven acres, also includes a swimming pool, barn, and horse paddock as well as multiple guest cottages, which contain an additional five bedrooms. Witherspoon and her family also share the ranch with donkeys, pigs, goats, chickens, and four dogs. No word on whether they come with the house or not.

Global 2012: Lady Gaga’s Little Sister Shines in Fashion Shoot

Looks like Lady Gaga's sister was born this way, too. But Natali Germanotta, 20, doesn't quite have the same eccentric fashion tastes as her older, famous sibling. In a photo shoot for ViralFashion.com, the Parsons The New School for Design student strikes a pose in various high-end pieces from Alaia, J Mendel, and Proenza Schouler as she hangs out with well-dressed pals at Joanne Trattoria, her parents' Italian restaurant located on New York City's Upper West Side. It's good advertisement for the eatery, no?

Natali also happens to work at Joanne Trattoria, which has been the recipient of some bad reviews (the New York Daily News deemed it "the worst thing since herpes") when she's not immersed in her fashion studies. Describing the staff — who she was photographed with — as "like a family unit" to ViralFashion.com, she added, "I do a little bit of everything and adore my family."

The fact that Natali agreed to star in this photo shoot is surprising since she's rarely seen and typically allows her sister to get all the attention. But she did accompany Lady Gaga (real name Stefani Germanotta) down the red carpet at the CFDA Fashion Awards in June 2011. Natali also starred in Gaga's 2010 music video for "Telephone," her collaboration with Beyonce.

But although the photo spread paints Joanne as an extravagant place where people come to see and be seen, that's not exactly the case, says ViralFashion.com creative director Christian Fleres. "Everything about the shoot was over the top from the oversized meatballs and the 20 pound fish on the table to the big hair and jewelry," he revealed. "We had drama in mind the whole time, for that day everyone was playing the superhero version of themselves."

Global 2012: What we really find attractive

NEW YORK - NOVEMBER 07: Shalane Flanagan #108...NEW YORK - NOVEMBER 07: Shalane Flanagan #108 of the United States falls to her knees after earning second place in the women's division of the 41st ING New York City Marathon on November 7, 2010 in New York City. (Image credit: Getty Images via @daylife)
I was recently on a business trip to New York with two female (and single) colleagues — one who was in her late twenties, the other in her late thirties, and I’m in my (ahem) late fifties. As we got into an elevator in a skyscraper, we were joined by a mysterious man who took my breath away. He was probably in his late forties; he had shaggy graying hair, an earring in one ear, wasn’t clean-shaven, sporting a slightly paunchy middle… but with his sapphire-colored cashmere scarf wrapped around his neck, this man also looked incredibly stylish. And there was something about the devilish way his eyes twinkled when he grinned, asked us which floor we wanted, and then joked about the hellish weather outside on the ride up.

When he stepped off a few floors below us, I gasped, “Oh my! There went my dream man!” My two younger colleagues wrinkled up their noses. The youngest said, “Ewwww! He’s chubby,” while the other woman said, “He’s a pirate, you can tell. Bad husband material.”

Are we attracted to different people as our relationship goals change?

I was both incredulous… and amused. It reminded me that, during each decade of our lives, we look for different things in a romance — from someone who will share their Twinkies with us in grade school to someone who will lovingly remind us to take our meds in our Golden Years. Our differing reactions to Elevator Man made me realize that, in our twenties, women are still having fun — we’re usually looking for someone who looks like Ryan Reynolds (or Scarlett Johansson) and imagining that a sexy smile and an awesome bod will make for solid companionship. And in our thirties, women get serious about finding a husband. My friend in her thirties had looked at Elevator Man, noticed his resemblance (at least in attitude) to Keith Richards, and subsequently labeled him a bad bet for either a spouse or, at minimum, a man with whom to bear a child.

I, on the other hand, actually prefer a man sporting some wrinkles and a few extra pounds (which makes it easier to ignore my own), an air of confidence, intelligence, a warm personality and an inviting grin rather than some young bad boy with six-pack abs. Although, truthfully, it wasn’t always so: when I was in my twenties I married my first husband, who was a champion swimmer — gorgeous, athletic and utterly shallow. But I didn’t care; so was I! And that kind of relationship worked well for us at the time. Of course, things fell apart when we both learned who we were and what we wanted — and it wasn’t something that could be accomplished while we stayed married to each other.

What we’ve learned about attraction from online dating

The good news about being single at any age is that there are many (okay, millions) of fish in the sea. The biggest question is: how to best reel these catches in? Consider the smorgasbord of possibilities provided by the Internet. Research recently presented at the annual meeting of the American Sociological Association found that 22 percent of heterosexual couples surveyed met online. No longer does it raise an eyebrow to introduce your new love interest by saying, “we met online.” Where friends used to be the primary resource for meeting other eligible singles to date, researchers now believe that the Internet could soon become the number-one place for finding dates and establishing new relationships. This is why myriad studies are being made of online dating sites, which are rich with plunderable data. The goal? To discover our likes and dislikes, then use that data to analyze what attracts us to each other. Some studies appear to be the culmination of mountains of work dissecting tons of data for a result that can be summed up as: “well, obviously.”

Men and women differ on defining “attractive” traits in a mate

One study coauthored by Duke University behavioral economist Dan Ariely found that men ranked a woman’s attractiveness as her most important trait. Pretty superficial, right? But women are just as guilty: to them, a man’s height was his most important feature. (And — contrary to one popular stereotype — income was not as important.) And what kind of physical type did men find to be the most attractive? They preferred women who were on the svelte side. Yes, the smaller the body mass index, the better. Women’s ratings of what they found attractive in men were less focused on physical attributes, and their opinions diverged widely on which men were more attractive than others. It mattered not one bit if a heavier woman held advanced degrees; any education beyond a bachelor’s degree did nothing to increase her desirability to men. And apparently, having fresh breath is also not a compelling factor in gauging a man’s interest: a woman’s smoking habit actually increases her desirability on dating sites — perhaps because men associate smoking with sexuality. Also filed under “no surprises here” is the study’s data analysis showing that men tend to look for younger women to partner with, while women looked for older men; in addition, women were pickier than men were about what they were looking for in a potential mate.

Another study published in the June 2009 issue of the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology by Wake Forest University psychologist Dustin Wood also found that men were very aligned in their thinking about what makes a woman attractive: a slender figure, a sense of seductiveness and projected confidence. For women, the study reinforced that assessing desirability in men is a more complex issue. Some women gave high attractiveness ratings to men whom other women said were not attractive at all. Hence, the story of Elevator Man — the one who captured my fancy, but left my two friends unimpressed. Vive le difference!

How the right photo can instantly make you seem more attractive

There are no studies that I can find about how our perceptions of attractiveness change as we age, but in some ways, online daters have quite a bit in common, regardless of their generation. Another online dating study analyzed 7,000 user photos and discovered that women get more male attention when they flirt into the camera or smile; men, on the other hand, got better responses when they looked away from the camera and didn’t smile. So, I guess I’m not the only sucker for a man of mystery!

Global 2012: George Michael Pulls Out Of Coma

Wham!Cover of Wham!
Careless whispers were definitely not on the agenda when George Michael woke from a lengthy coma late last year. In fact, quite the contrary--the singer and former Wham! frontman scared his doctors by speaking his first words in an accent totally different from his usual dialect.

Michael, who normally talks like the London native that he is, found himself inexplicably using a distinctive burr from England's West Country for a couple days. Since he'd just spent three weeks in a coma due to a life-threatening case of pneumonia, medical staff feared this meant he'd suffered brain damage.

"My doctors were genuinely worried that I had this condition, it's a genuine thing where people wake from comas speaking French or some other language they learned at school," Michael explained to a London radio station.

"They were worried I could have spoken like that for the rest of my life...Not that there's anything wrong with the West Country accent--but it's a bit weird when you come from North London."

Michael noted that although his doctors were concerned, his family was just so relieved to have him awake that they found the bizarre accent hysterical. "They were just laughing away at me talking in this weird accent," he said. "I basically did two days' worth of stand-up comedy."

The star was rushed to an Austrian hospital last November in the middle of a European tour, forcing him to cancel all his remaining appearances. He's since rescheduled the tour and invited the hospital staff to attend one of the shows. His new music video, "White Light," which features model Kate Moss, references his near-brush with death.

As Michael noted, there's nothing wrong with a West Country accent--it's simply a colorful way of speaking that, like many distinctive accents, has been parodied in regional comedy over the years. To us Yanks across the pond, perhaps a reasonable equivalent would be if someone from Detroit suddenly woke up talking like a New York City cabbie or a country singer from Tuscaloosa.

Alec Baldwin and his yoga instructor fiancee tied the knot Saturday in a New York City church, with a guest list that included family and famous Hollywood pals.

Baldwin, 54, and Hilaria Thomas, 28, married at St. Patrick's Old Cathedral in a Catholic ceremony performed by the Rev. George Deas. His "30 Rock" co-star Tina Fey, actress Mariska Hargitay, director Woody Allen, environmental lawyer Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and Baldwin's actor-brother, Stephen, were among those in attendance.

Thomas wore a silk magnolia Amsale gown with cap sleeves and a keyhole back neckline accented with crystal buttons. Baldwin's suit was designed by Tom Ford.

The two began dating last year and became in engaged in April. Baldwin was previously married to actress Kim Basinger; they have a daughter, Ireland, who attended the wedding Saturday in a slate silk chiffon gown also designed by Amsale.

The reception was being held at New York University's Kimmel Center.

The "Rock of Ages" actor warmly received congratulations from well-wishing fans on his way in for the service, said his friend and publicist, Matthew Hiltzik.

Hours before the ceremony, Baldwin tweeted lines from an Emily Dickenson poem. One read: "Was bridal e'er like this? A paradise, the host, And cherubim and seraphim The most familiar guest.

Global 2012: Fifth Ave. Frogger takes the arcade game to the streets

Frogger BeyondFrogger Beyond (Photo credit: Wikipedia)
Who can forget the awesome Seinfeld episode where George Costanza attempts to navigate a Frogger machine across a busy Manhattan street?

Now, an enterprising gamer has brought that episode to life in a much, much safer way.

Frogger fan Tyler DeAngelo grew tired of the familiar traffic patterns of the game's vehicles, so decided to up the challenge by replacing those cars with a real-time replica of traffic on one of New York City's busiest streets. The result was Fifth Avenue Frogger.

DeAngelo rigged a webcam on a nearby high-rise and pointed it at the street, then wrote a program to translate the positional data of the cars into the game. That makes for a challenge that is not only safer than George's venture across the streets, but one that's less likely to have the same ending.

Unfortunately, if you want to play the game, you'll have to be in Manhattan. The data is transmitted to a hacked, standalone Frogger machine standing on the the side of the street. Oh, but those lucky few who did get to try the game got to experience what seems to be an amazing new take on a classic game.

It has, after all, been 31 years since Frogger first hit pizza parlors and arcades. While Konami has attempted to update it several times, the original coin-op game has always been the version people remember and prefer.

Global 2011: Conversation Starters From The Pro's

Cover of "Wolves in Chic Clothing: A Nove...Cover of Wolves in Chic Clothing: A Novel
Denise Fennell
Stand-up comic and lead actress from Off-Broadway hit, Tony n’ Tina’s Wedding
“The art of what I do, as far as improv, is about initiating conversation with strangers. I look at someone and try to find something on their body that I can connect with; I look at clothes—shoes, ties, whatever. I think guys find it endearing if you say something like, ‘I bought my dad the same shirt.’ It’s less of a come-on that way. I also think girls can get away with sillier things. I’ll stare at people until they notice me and say, ‘What are you looking at?’ and it totally works in terms of breaking the ice. You have to realize that the worst thing that can happen is he (or she) won’t respond and then you didn’t have a chance anyway—so you’ve got nothing to lose.”

Cristophe
Celebrity hairdresser to Bill Clinton, Nicole Kidman, and Liv Tyler
“Don’t play it cool. Being intimidating and aloof is no way to start a dialogue, or a relationship. Being casual and friendly goes a long way towards establishing trust with someone. Also, use the fact that everyone has an image or fantasy of who they are inside. Tell someone they remind you of a certain celebrity and maybe continue the dialogue by asking, ‘If you could be any celebrity, who would it be?’ It’s about finding out what someone’s dreams may be. Then you can start connecting with them.”

Jill Kargman and Carrie Karasyov
Socialites and authors of the book, Wolves in Chic Clothing
“Eavesdropping can be a clever entry point to a conversation. Let’s call it the ‘accidental eavesdrop’ because you don’t want to be rude. But especially someplace like New York, where people are literally on top of each other, it’s easy to overhear something and join in with something fun and clever.”

Danny Millan
Co-owner of the New York City café Kingsize and bartender
“Treat the person you want to talk to as a human being—as opposed to someone you’re trying to pick up. You can just say, ‘I’m not trying to hit on you, but you’ve got a beautiful smile.’ And if that’s the end of the conversation, let it be the end of the conversation. Be respectful and don’t force it. Everyone appreciates being told something nice, no strings attached. Be earnest, give a real compliment, and maintain eye contact when you’re talking. A woman can be wearing a low-cut top but make sure to talk to her—and not to them. Women are very quick to pick up on these nuances.”

Donald P. Gregg
Former ambassador to South Korea
“I think showing you have a sense of humor is a real door-opener. A willingness to be self-deprecating is often helpful. And remember that sometimes it’s a question of not saying too much—not falling all over yourself. Being low-key is good. And remember: The staring over your shoulder, or looking beyond the person you’re talking to as if to see who else is there—that’s a killer.”

Dr. Joy Browne
National radio-show host
“Pick something in the environment around you that you can comment on, like ‘Isn’t that the ugliest painting you ever saw?’ It’s something they can focus on, comment on, and it’s non-threatening. Or just be bold: Once I was in a party at a bar. I walked in and there were about 50 women—attractive, smart, well-dressed—but virtually no men. I walked up to the little cluster of men and said, ‘My friends and I are over there in the back, and they triple-dog-dared me to invite you guys over.’ The worst that someone can say is bug off, but so what?”

Paula Froelich

“Start with a compliment; there just aren’t enough compliments going around. A guy once looked at me and said, ‘I’m sorry to interrupt, but I just want to tell you I think you are really beautiful.’ It was short, simple and sweet and I was so flattered I was speechless, which rarely happens. But make sure it’s sincere and honest. Having a good conversation is about finding common ground, and that takes listening. You may only be interested in their butt, but you won’t get any closer to the butt if you don’t work the head.”

Global 2011: 3 Things You Don't Know About a Man Until You Marry Him

NEW YORK - NOVEMBER 30: A man sits in a vinta...Image by Getty Images via @daylife
I learned this a decade ago during my tenure as a bouncer at a New York City bar. There I saw all the deceptive ways men present themselves during the courting process. Looking back, I realize I was guilty of them too. Karel dated a very different Aaron than the one she settled into a long-term relationship with. Most women do. Let me explain.

1. Single men are dripping in cash.

2. Single guys clean up nice (and often).

3. Single guys live for foreplay.

Three first editions of Barbie dolls from 1959...Image via Wikipedia
The celebrity toy-couple that shocked the world with their split after 43 years together could be reuniting this year, but only if 'Sweet Talkin' Ken' succeeds in wooing Barbie back.
Ken is on a mission this year. He wants Barbie back.

He's sporting a new Justin Bieber-like look, and a new name: Sweet Talkin Ken.

And he's not holding back in his quest to woo Barbie back — by Valentine's Day.

Here's the scoop.

Don't be surprised if you see billboards in New York and Los Angeles with Ken professing his renewed love for his ladydoll, declaring "Barbie, you are the only doll for me."

Even better, "Barbie, we may be plastic but our love is real."

Ken and Barbie fans may also have picked up on the famous exes flirting on Facebook, or noted that Ken checked in on Foursquare at the famous Magnolia Bakery in New York to get special cupcakes for his favorite girl.

Ken's thinks he's the ultimate boyfriend but Barbie fans will have to wait a few more weeks to find out if he succeeds in his quest.

Breakup that rocked the world: Ken and Barbie shocked their fans — and the world — when the doll world's "golden couple" went splitsville in 2004.

The couples' romance began 50 years ago when they met on the set of their first television commercial together in 1961.

Global 2010: Buffett and Osberg's Like a Marriage, Only More Enduring

Alice Schroeder with Warren Buffett.Image via Wikipedia
Twenty years ago, Warren Buffett invited Sharon Osberg to Omaha to play cards. It was a game that changed their lives. Now best friends, the pair chat about their relationship and the rigors of low-stakes, high-pressure bridge.

Here's how the second-richest man in America introduced himself to Sharon Osberg:

He invited her into his office, got her down on hands and knees, and had her play him in a fixed-dice game.

At the time, Osberg was an executive at Wells Fargo and a world-champion bridge player. She had briefly met Warren Buffett, an avid amateur, at a game in New York City, and the Berkshire Hathaway CEO had invited her to his Omaha headquarters.

"His theory was, this is how he would break the ice," Osberg says. "They were nontransitive dice [a sort of party trick for statistics geeks]. There I was, in my dress, on my hands and knees, rolling dice on Warren Buffett's floor, in a situation where I couldn't win. He thought it was hilarious." After Buffett finished laughing, the two went out for steak, then played bridge at his local club. The game was "terrible," Buffett recalls. "Humiliating," says Osberg. "But we had a really good time."

That was 20 years ago, and the two have been bridge partners and friends ever since. They play together an average of four times a week. It's a long-distance, platonic relationship that was founded on the card game but has evolved. Osberg lives in Marin County, outside of San Francisco, and communicates with Buffett a couple of times a day by phone, and then again via the computer, where the two chat as they play online.

"She's a very good friend now, even though we don't see each other that often," says Buffett. Osberg agrees. "He's just my best friend. He's changed my life. I'm the luckiest human being in the world."

Beyond their passion for the game, the pair relate in other ways—like the dry humor they share. Even their differences are complementary. Osberg is a professional technologist who ran Wells Fargo's online banking group, and Buffett famously steers clear of anything with a chip.

"At least two or three times a month, he'll call me and say, 'This is on my screen, what do I do?'" she says. But serving as a billionaire technophobe's IT director is relatively easy work, Osberg allows: "Whenever there's any kind of a problem with his computer, he just goes out and buys another one."
