Global 2013: Women’s most romantic dates

If you could package up all the elements of a romantic date and sell it, you’d make millions. Everyone wants an absolutely perfect, over-the-top experience that makes your pulse race, your heart swell, and your senses come alive — but it’s not that easy to pull off. The most romantic dates are often the result of alchemy; they combine good timing, planning, execution, luck and a little bit of magic to produce a memory that lasts a lifetime.

Recently, I asked women to tell me about their most romantic date memories. From viewing a spectacular sunset high above the city to boldly reclaiming romance after a lengthy illness, listen as these ladies let us in on the secrets that made these moments so unforgettable:

“My meeting with the boy next door in Paris netted us both a new relationship”
“I’d been looking forward to my overseas trip so much,” says Maryland resident Patricia, 32. “My friend Janelle and I had planned to visit Paris for three days and then take the train to stay with my sister in London. At the last minute, Janelle got sick and couldn’t travel. I was torn about visiting Paris alone. I didn’t speak French; Janelle’s fluent and was going to be our translator… but I’d already paid for both the plane ticket and the hotel, and my sister was expecting me in London. A little voice inside me said: Do it. It’s an adventure. You never do anything alone anymore. So off I went, and the first night, I was terrified. I felt very alone and troubled by the language barrier. As I lamely attempted to order lunch at a bistro in the Marais district on the second day, a man about my age who was eating lunch by himself while intently reading something on his iPad interrupted me. In perfect French, he told the waitress what I was trying to order. I thanked him and we started chatting. Turns out, he’s a teacher from Baltimore who lives 30 minutes away from me and happened to be visiting friends in France and Germany for a few weeks. He asked me if I’d like to have dinner that night, and I said ‘yes.’ He was really cute, we flirted up a storm, and all of a sudden during dinner, I just fell in love with Paris,” admits Patricia.

“After 15 years, I was reunited with my college sweetheart”
“His email came from out of the blue,” recalls North Carolina native Sarah, 39. “But there it was, a note from Jimmy (my college boyfriend) writing to see how I was doing, ask if I was planning to attend our 15-year college reunion, and also fill me in on the news that he was recently divorced. I’d been in love with Jimmy, but after college, we broke up and went our separate ways — me to New York City to work in the publishing industry; him to Raleigh, NC, where he opened a landscaping business near where I lived shortly after leaving New York. We had mutual friends and kept in touch [with each other] indirectly. He married and had two children; I didn’t, but I’d had a couple of long relationships, both of which were now over. But the idea of meeting Jimmy again at the reunion sounded too clichĂ© to me; these things never work, and it’s always a disappointment because you can’t recapture the past.”

“Watching the sun set over Seattle made me feel like I was in a Hollywood movie”
“My most romantic date ever started with a picnic and ended high above the city, watching the sun set over Seattle,” says Mary, 28, who left her hometown in Oregon because she wanted to discover love and excitement in a big city. “I’d met Patrick online and we’d had two dates already. We decided that for date #3, I’d choose the first activity, he’d choose the second, and we’d surprise each other. I decided on having a picnic at Pike Place Market and brought a blanket, cups, utensils, and a basket so we could load up on goodies from the market and take them to a grassy area not too far away. It was so much fun picking out fruits, cheeses and breads with him, exploring, trying things, talking for hours on the blanket… then came his turn.”

“We found ways to reconnect on the road to nowhere”
“I’d gotten to the point where romantic gestures seemed rote to me,” says Washington native Suzy. “It’s Valentine’s Day, get the flowers; plan a dinner for the anniversary… nothing bad, but it was all just so expected. My husband Bill and I had been married for 15 years, and I think you get either lazy about connecting — or, in our case, acting a little too by-the-book. Bill and I had been working really hard for several months, and I think he knew I’d grown tired of being over-scheduled. Before my last birthday, he told me very cryptically to be prepared for a day trip. We dropped the two kids off at my sister’s house, and then the fun began.”

“Her joy in making me happy made this my favorite date ever”
“My girlfriend Melissa knew I’d been dying to see K.D. Lang, my favorite singer, in concert,” relates Tina, 38. “So she got two tickets to her Wolf Trap outdoor theater performance in the Virginia countryside. She took me to dinner beforehand, and she was more excited than I was, I think. Seeing my girlfriend so excited to do something nice for me was deeply romantic. It was a hot summer night, and we held hands during the show. Getting to experience a night with my favorite performer and my favorite girlfriend ever just made it over-the-top special for me.”

“Celebrating getting back to normal was the highlight of our marriage”
“I’d had an awful year, just the worst,” says Marylander Carrie, 43. “I’d had breast cancer, and the treatments — which took a toll on me physically and emotionally — ended in late January. I was not an easy patient. I wasn’t one of those tough chicks who grin and bear it. I was really upset, and my husband of 10 years bore the brunt of my anxiety (with 100% grace I might add). About a month after my treatments ended, I surprised him by getting all dolled up, making his favorite dinner, and opening a bottle of champagne like it was a combination birthday/Valentine’s Day celebration. It was neither, but it was my comeback! I felt strong and healthy, and I wanted to thank him for all he’d done to make that possible, all the dinners he’d made, and all the times he’d sat with me when I was feeling lousy. It was our most romantic date ever because we’d triumphed over something terrible and were able to smile, laugh, love and celebrate again… together.”

Global 2013: Michael Phelps and Megan Rossee Split

Michael Phelps may be nursing a broken heart.

The Olympian has reportedly split from his model girlfriend, Megan Rossee. The beautiful blond was first spotted on the arm of her favorite swimmer during the Summer Olympics in London in August 2012.

The couple were last spotted together at an event for the National Aquarium on December 27. The organization posted a photo that evening on Twitter with the caption , "Thanks again to @MichaelPhelps and @meganrossee for visiting us tonight! Our boys loved the extra play time.

A few days later the swimming star tweeted the cryptic message, "Things happen for a reason. #notme."

Rossee responded with an odd photo stating, "A woman's loyalty is tested when her man has nothing. A man's loyalty is tested when he has everything."

With the news that their relationship is sunk, the superstar swimmer joins a growing group of sports stars who have called game over on their relationships in recent months.

Global 2012: Does Kristen Stewart's Alleged Fling With Rupert Sanders Explain Her Sexy Style Shift?

Kristen Stewart of "Twilight" fame p...Kristen Stewart of "Twilight" fame plays on the vampire mystique at the 82nd Academy Awards, March 7, in Hollywood, Calif. (Photo credit: Wikipedia)Grazia Daily is aghast. This morning we were greeted with shocking rumours that Kristen Stewart may have cheated on her long-time Twilight love Robert Pattinson with the director of Snow White and the Huntsman. Say it isn't so!

Kristen became Rupert Sanders's new muse when he cast her as the lead role in Snow White and the Huntsman. In recent months, we've seen the pair promote the film together around the world, gracing red carpets from London to Australia.

Now, American magazine Us Weekly claims to have photographic evidence of the incident, which they claim happened in July. 'Kristen is absolutely devastated,' one source supposedly told People.com. 'It was a mistake and a complete lapse in judgment. She wasn't having an affair with Rupert. It was just a fleeting moment that shouldn't have happened.'  Kristen and Rupert have not confirmed the story.

If true, as well as a potentially heartbroken R-Pattz, Rupert is married to Liberty Ross who he has two children with. The stunning model looked oh-so-glam wearing a sparkling Tom Ford gown at the film's London premiere in May, which she attended in support of her hubby. Liberty starred as Kristen's mother in the Snow White remake and we have to admit: there is a striking similarity between the two. See the super-slim face, the dark hair, the pale skin, those sharp brows…uh oh.

Grazia Daily saw the trio up-close when we attended the film's London party, before the rumours emerged. As our snap shows, Kristen and Rupert were seen checking out the band together while boyfriend Rob sat at a table talking to sister Lizzie.

Perhaps pouring cold water on the rumours, Kristen and Rob were seen looking typically low-key but very much together as they left their favourite restaurant, The Hotel Cafe, in West Hollywood last night. Was this a perfectly-timed outing to prove 'Robsten' lives on? We sure hope so.

Meanwhile, us fash fans can't help but think that if Kristen did fall into the arms of an older (tres dapper) man, it might explain her sudden style shift. We've seen the tomboyish star stalking the red carpet in recent months looking hotter than ever, most noticeably at the Cannes Film Festival when she swathed her bod in a scarlet Reem Acra gown, then she slipped into a studded Balmain ensemble for the Australian premiere before working that rather revealing Marchesa gown, remember?. Take a look through the gallery above of Kristen's style hits and let us know whether YOU think her wardrobe speaks a thousand words…

Global 2012: George Michael Pulls Out Of Coma

Wham!Cover of Wham!
Careless whispers were definitely not on the agenda when George Michael woke from a lengthy coma late last year. In fact, quite the contrary--the singer and former Wham! frontman scared his doctors by speaking his first words in an accent totally different from his usual dialect.

Michael, who normally talks like the London native that he is, found himself inexplicably using a distinctive burr from England's West Country for a couple days. Since he'd just spent three weeks in a coma due to a life-threatening case of pneumonia, medical staff feared this meant he'd suffered brain damage.

"My doctors were genuinely worried that I had this condition, it's a genuine thing where people wake from comas speaking French or some other language they learned at school," Michael explained to a London radio station.

"They were worried I could have spoken like that for the rest of my life...Not that there's anything wrong with the West Country accent--but it's a bit weird when you come from North London."

Michael noted that although his doctors were concerned, his family was just so relieved to have him awake that they found the bizarre accent hysterical. "They were just laughing away at me talking in this weird accent," he said. "I basically did two days' worth of stand-up comedy."

The star was rushed to an Austrian hospital last November in the middle of a European tour, forcing him to cancel all his remaining appearances. He's since rescheduled the tour and invited the hospital staff to attend one of the shows. His new music video, "White Light," which features model Kate Moss, references his near-brush with death.

As Michael noted, there's nothing wrong with a West Country accent--it's simply a colorful way of speaking that, like many distinctive accents, has been parodied in regional comedy over the years. To us Yanks across the pond, perhaps a reasonable equivalent would be if someone from Detroit suddenly woke up talking like a New York City cabbie or a country singer from Tuscaloosa.

Global 2011: Prince Harry instead of William on royal wedding mug

Prince William at a Polo match in Sandhurst, J...Image via Wikipedia
Everyone knows Kate Middleton is marrying Prince William. Well, almost everyone. The people behind a souvenir mug that commemorates the royal wedding didn't get the memo and made a pretty big gaffe.

They got the picture of Kate Middleton correct, but instead of William, the mug features an image of his younger brother, Harry. Ruh ro.

According to the UK's Telegraph, the mug was supposedly designed by Guandong Enterprises, a Chinese firm. But the Telegraph found that the company is "apparently registered in Britain." Does that mean that this "mistake" could instead be, in the Telegraph's words, "an elaborate spoof"?

Global 2010: Year's Biggest Luxury Buys

Mexican businessman Carlos Slim HelĂș.Image via Wikipedia
Billionaires spent record sums on a rare gem, truffles and one of the most expensive paintings ever sold.

What's more extravagant than spending $330,000 on two white truffles, the pricey fungi popular with foodies around the world? Spending $330,000 on the mushrooms and then not even eating them. Billionaire Stanley Ho, the casino king of Macau, did just that at a London auction last month. According to a truffle expert, the large, aged Italian specimens Ho bought--"grand champions," in industry parlance--were not the sort you'd want to sprinkle on your risotto. "They're mostly or entirely unusable for culinary concerns," says Britt Bunyard, publisher of Fungi magazine. "They're over-mature, split open, and often have bad or decomposed parts. The truffle connoisseur would pass them over for younger, fresher ones."

Sales of luxury goods this year nearly reached the 2007 peak, at $235 billion, says a Bain consulting study. The ultrarich on Forbes' world billionaire lists did their part, splurging on art, jewelry, horses, even incense burners and truffles. Here are some of their most expensive purchases in 2010.

Steven Cohen
Art: $145.4 million

Mian Muhammad Mansha
Hotel: $85 to $95 million

Kelcy Warren
Ranch: $46.5 million

Laurence Graff
Diamond: $46 million

Carlos Slim
Mansion: $44 million
