Global 2010: 6 steps for writing a charming email

Email-me-buttonImage via Wikipedia
“Can I call you?” I asked.

Why don’t you email instead, was her reply.

Had I come on too strong? Was she one of those damaged, disfigured souls more comfortable in cyberspace than with face-to-face interaction? She was blonde and had a fetching smile, so I considered these questions for about 1/8th of a second.

“Sure,” I said. “No problem. Email is fine.”

Step 1: Wow ‘em with something cool in your subject line. Since it’s the only thing the recipient will be able to see in your email before opening it, your subject line had better be a lot more eye-catching than “Hello.” Try something more unique that relates to your last interaction with them. You both loved North by Northwest? Then your subject line could be “Eva Marie Saint...” That’ll get her attention. In the text of the message, begin with “She has nothing on you when it comes to charm and intrigue...”

Step 2: Make your email all about the other person. Enough about you and your life; the fastest way to impress someone is to focus on her interests. Your date’s a NASCAR fan? Then Jeff Gordon rules! And don’t worry, brushing up on these subjects with some quick research online is allowed, as long as you don’t overdo it (see point 3).

Step 3: Make yourself look good, but don’t make yourself into something you won’t be able to live with. She’s a red-state Republican and you stumped for Obama? Then “I respect the efficiency of the administration’s current operation” is okay. “All liberals should move to France” is probably going a little too far.

Step 4: Email is no time to bare your soul. Honest and self-aware is one thing; psychotic and confessional is something else. Here’s an example: “Watching the news, sometimes I struggle to make sense of a world gone mad and long for nothing more than the opportunity to love and be loved,” might be okay, even A-plus…if you’re emailing a grad student, that is.

Step 5: Keep it short. Sure, novel-length dispatches sent every hour, on the hour, show that you’re brimming with things you want to share, but they also say you have way too much time on your hands, or are just plain obsessive and creepy. Not a good message for someone you’re trying to woo. The wisdom of showbiz applies here: Leave ’em wanting more.

Step 6: Exit gracefully. When you’re signing off, err on the side of restraint. Better to leave someone wondering about your intentions than set off alarm bells with something too amorous.

Global 2010: 7 Sleep-Stealing Foods to Stay Away From

MANCHESTER, ENGLAND - OCTOBER 06: A man falls...Image by Getty Images via @daylife
If you find yourself tossing and turning at night, your dinner could be to blame.

Caffeine
"Though caffeine does provide us with that feeling of alertness, it's just a stimulant," says Michelle Dudash, registered dietician, chef, and freelancer writer.

Aged Cheese
If a nap is in your future, steer clear of Parmesan, Romano, Asiago, and other hard cheeses (basically, all the yummy smelly ones!). The high levels of the amino acid tyramine are known to keep you up.

Spicy Foods
Hot tamale! Those hot wings may taste damn good during the football game, but they aren't going to feel so great come bedtime — especially if you're prone to heartburn, since lying down only amps up its side.

Processed or Smoked Meats
Leave this one on the deli counter.

Alcohol
Even though it's a depressant, alcohol will, oddly enough, keep you up at night. "Many people use alcohol to help them relax, but it actually prevents your body from entering the deep stages of sleep," says Pasquella. Although you may fall asleep, you won't feel very well-rested in the morning.

Milk Chocolate
The average milk chocolate bar contains tyrosine, which is converted into dopamine — a stimulant, says Pasquella. This causes alertness and restlessness, which can keep you up at night.

Ginseng Tea
Herbal teas are great for sleeping, but steer clear of ginseng. It's been shown to act as a stimulant, and though some tea drinkers don't feel any effects from the tea, others experience insomnia and hypertension.

Global 2010: 6 Things You Should Never Reveal on Facebook

Image representing Facebook as depicted in Cru...Image via CrunchBase
You can certainly enjoy networking and sharing photos, but you should know that sharing some information puts you at risk. What should you never say on Facebook, Twitter or any other social networking site?

Your Birth Date and Place

Sure, you can say what day you were born, but if you provide the year and where you were born too, you've just given identity thieves a key to stealing your financial life, said Givens.

Vacation Plans

Post the photos on Facebook when you return, if you like. But don't invite criminals in by telling them specifically when you'll be gone.

Home Address

Some 40% listed their home address on the sites; 65% didn't even attempt to block out strangers with privacy settings. And 60% said they weren't confident that their "friends" were really just people they know.

Confessionals

You may hate your job; lie on your taxes; or be a recreational user of illicit drugs, but this is no place to confess. Employers commonly peruse social networking sites to determine who to hire — and, sometimes, who to fire. Need proof? In just the past few weeks, an emergency dispatcher was fired in Wisconsin for revealing drug use; a waitress got canned for complaining about customers and the Pittsburgh Pirate's mascot was dumped for bashing the team on Facebook. One study done last year estimated that 8% of companies fired someone for "misuse" of social media.

Password Clues

If you've got online accounts, you've probably answered a dozen different security questions, telling your bank or brokerage firm your Mom's maiden name; the church you were married in; or the name of your favorite song. You're giving crooks an easy way to guess your passwords.

Risky Behaviors

Insurers are increasingly turning to the web to figure out whether their applicants and customers are putting their lives or property at risk, according to Insure.com. So far, there's no efficient way to collect the data, so cancellations and rate hikes are rare.

Manila 2010: 5 reasons he didn’t call you

Dating the EnemyImage via Wikipedia
When it comes to off-putting dating behavior, men commit plenty of dumb moves. He wears sneakers at a nice restaurant. He goes on and on about his boring job.

But what about those cases where the guy does win you over… and yet never calls again? Have you ever stopped to wonder what went wrong? While you might think winning a man’s heart largely boils down to your looks, you’re wrong. Below are five key things that well-intentioned women do that make men bail. Keep them in mind as you search for your Mr. Right

Reason #1: You talk, but don’t listen
Women are sharers. It’s culturally ingrained. You may talk to your best friend or mom five times a day and think nothing of it. Every detail is relevant, and nothing can be left out in the telling of a story. Problem is, men don’t generally communicate that way. So try to consider the ebb and flow of a normal conversation. And if it’s occurred to you that you haven’t yet learned a thing about your date, try listening for a bit. It’s not that we’re not interested in getting to know you, it’s that we’d be thrilled if you were interested in getting to know us, too.

Reason #2: You use conversation as therapy
Talking about your evil ex-boyfriend. Talking about your hatred of your job. Talking about your strained relationship with your mother. It’s not that the bad stuff is irrelevant, it’s that it’s inappropriate.

Reason #3: You’re a little too enthusiastic about him
There’s an unwritten rule in dating that governs the energy flow between a man and a woman: when one party tries too hard, the other party pulls back. If a stranger has ever bought you a costly gift on the first date or called you seven times the day after you had coffee, you know what I mean. We’re not saying you should act cold; just don’t get carried away in front of him.

Reason #4: Your idea of chit-chat is politics, religion and other heavy topics
Hey, if your date is up for a surprise appearance on Meet the Press, that’s cool. Just know that not everybody likes to swim in the deep end of the pool so early. Sometimes, you’re better off sticking with banter about favorite travel spots or good movies or even funny online dates from the past. It’s not that intellectual topics should be off-limits, but until you know where someone lands on the political spectrum, you may want to tread lightly.

Reason #5: You’re not relating to him — you’re testing him
Dating should be fun. Getting to know a fascinating stranger, sharing information about yourself to an interested date… these are the things that keep us optimistic about the process. Where it all goes wrong is when you inadvertently turn him into a defendant and yourself into the prosecuting attorney. “How long was your last relationship?” “Where do you see yourself in two years?” “Do you want kids someday?” Try reading between the lines instead of asking him these things point-blank.

Global 2010: Storm Premier Invasion bowling ball

Storm_Attitude_ShiftImage by Axel Schwenke via Flickr
Storm INVASION™

BEGIN TRANSMISSION:

Some... THING... attacked Premier City without warning. Our site sustained heavy damage and many were taken, but we gathered what we could and scrambled quickly underground.

When the invasion occurred, we were in the midst of testing the next generation of advancement in core and coverstock technology.  Our first goal was to develop a strong asymmetrical design different than any other.  The concept was to create contours along the RG planes to ensure a stronger preferred spin axis.  We did this by developing intersecting contoured bands from the X-axis along the Y and Z axes.  These bands are developed at specific arcs to maximize RG and differential values along the planes.  In turn, this translates into a quicker revving core with a more defined moment of inertia or breakpoint unlike any prior design found on the market.

The all new Origin™ core boasts a 2.48 RG value with .057 total differential and a .017 intermediate differential.  Using C.A.T.S., we tested the Origin™ core up against the Shape Lock™-HD core with same coverstock to see the differences, and we were amazed by the results.  The Origin™ core started into the “hook” phase about 3 feet sooner and created a stronger entry angle to the pocket.  Usually when we get the ball started into the “hook” phase sooner we see less entry angle to the pocket, but this core with the contoured bands along the RG planes definitely showed us something different.

The finishing touch was the R3X™ coverstock.  This third generation of Reactor™ series coverstock has the highest Ra values ever produced by Storm products.   Based on the USBC Ball Motion Study we know that higher Ra values produce more ball motion in the oil, and this coverstock is no exception.  We saw a 9% increase in friction values in the oil and an increase of 5% down the lane over its predecessor R2X™ utilizing C.A.T.S. testing.

END TRANSMISSION.

Global 2010: 2 panda cubs born in Spanish zoo

PandaImage by AndyLawson via Flickr
MADRID – Two newborn pandas are the latest additions to the Madrid Zoo.

The hairless, pink twins were born to a giant panda Tuesday after being conceived through artificial insemination, and each weigh 150 grams (5 ounces), the zoo said.

It will be a few days before veterinarians can determine their gender.

They are the first pandas born in the Madrid Zoo since it unveiled one named Chu-Lin in 1982 — the first panda born in captivity in Europe. That one became wildly popular and a symbol of the Spanish capital.

Spain's National Research Council, which took part in the recent insemination along with scientists from China, said pandas have been born in Europe four times — twice in Madrid and two other times in the Vienna zoo.

The council said there are only an estimated 1,600 pandas left living in the wild in China, their numbers depleted by destruction of their habitat.

The Madrid Zoo has four of the endangered animals: the newborns and their parents, mother Hua Zui Ba and father Bing Xing.
