Global 2012: Taylor Swift's Red sold 1,208,000

Taylor Swift's Red sold 1,208,000 copies in its first week, the greatest one-week total since Eminem's The Eminem Show sold 1,322,000 in its first full week in June 2002. It's the second-highest one-week sales tally ever for a female artist. Britney Spears' Oops!...I Did It Again sold 1,319,000 in its first week in May 2000. (Swift should get extra credit for degree of difficulty. It's much harder to do this now than it was back then when records were, you know, selling.)

Wrap your head around this: Red sold more copies than every other album in the top 50 combined. (More than every other album in the top 52, to be precise.)

The tally for Red is up from the 1,047,000 that Swift's previous album, Speak Now, sold in its first week in October 2010. And that was up from the 592K copies that her sophomore album, Fearless, sold its first week in November 2008. And that was way up from the 39K that her first album, Taylor Swift, sold in its first week in October 2006.

Swift is one of only four artists to ring up first-week sales of 1 million or more copies more than once. The others are Backstreet Boys, *NSYNC and Eminem. This makes Swift the first female artist and the first country artist to achieve this feat. And she's just the second artist, following Backstreet Boys, to see its sales increase from its first million-selling first-week to its second. Details below.

The tally for Red includes 465K digital copies, which constitutes the second-highest digital total in history. Lady Gaga's Born This Way sold 662K digital copies in its first week in May 2011. And that total included about 400K copies that sold for 99 cents at Amazon MP3. (Gaga fans wish I'd stop bringing that up, but it is a pretty significant asterisk.) Mumford & Sons' Babel sold 420K digital copies in its first week in September, which is now the third highest one-week tally.

Red becomes Swift's third #1 album on The Billboard 200. Swift is only the third female artist in country music history to notch three #1 albums. She follows Faith Hill, who scored with Breathe, Cry and Fireflies, and Carrie Underwood, who scored with Carnival Ride, Play On and Blown Away. (Hill, of course, is married to Tim McGraw, the subject of Swift's first hit on both the Hot 100 and Hot Country Songs, "Tim McGraw.")

Red smashes Garth Brooks' record for the greatest one-week sales in history for a country album. Double Live sold 1,085,000 copies in its first week in November 1998. (It goes without saying that Red enters Top Country Albums at #1. It's Swift's fifth #1 country album.)

Global 2012: Taylor Swift Reaches Breaking Point Over Boys On ‘Ellen’ Show

There's plenty of fodder for discussion regarding Taylor Swift this week--after all, the country/pop cutie has just released her fourth album, Red, which has already spawned several rapid-fire hits and is anticipated to crack 1 million in first-week sales. However, when the superstar appeared on the Ellen DeGeneres show Thursday, DeGeneres just skipped to what fans really want to talk about: Boys, of course.

In fact, DeGeneres teased Swift so mercilessly about the subject--to the point of playing a slideshow of the singer's past flames--that Swift actually had a mini-breakdown on air.

"Stop it, stop it, stop it!" she screamed. "This makes me feel so bad about myself. Every time I come up here, you put a different dude up on the screen. It just makes me really question what I stand for as a human being."

One can hardly blame poor Swift for reaching the breaking point. DeGeneres started off the interview by repeatedly insisting Swift and her Lorax co-star Zac Efron were an item at one point. ("We never dated," protested Swift. "Yes you did," fired back DeGeneres. "Why do you deny it?")

Then, DeGeneres offered to discuss Swift's new album--and, by "discuss," we mean she attempted to get Swift to disclose which ex-boyfriend the hit "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together" is about.

"Here's what I'll do. You don't have to say," DeGeneres offered, handing a baffled Swift a large bell and indicating a screen behind the pair. "I'm gonna show you pictures, here's a bell, and you ring it when..."

"Oh my God!" exclaimed Swift. "I don't know if I'm going to do this. This is the one shred of dignity that I have."

DeGeneres, undaunted, started a slideshow showing Swift posing with various men--including everyone from John Mayer to Danny DeVito. After DeGeneres gleefully rang the bell herself a few times, Swift finally put her head in her hands and cried for mercy.

"There's never been two guys on the screen two visits in a row," she pleaded with DeGeneres. "It's sad."

"Well, you have to come more often," quipped DeGeneres. "Just so you can say 'He's still there!'"

DeGeneres didn't just torture her celeb guest about romantic issues. She also pranked Swift, who confessed earlier to a fear of earwigs, by having a production member dressed up as a giant bug sneak up on the singer--causing her to jump and squeal, much to the delight of the audience.

Global 2012: Taylor Swift And Conor Kennedy Share A Smooch In Massachusetts

English: Taylor Swift at the premiere for Hann...English: Taylor Swift at the premiere for Hannah Montana: The Movie. (Photo credit: Wikipedia)If investing in expensive real estate across the street from the Kennedy compound wasn't enough proof that Taylor Swift is serious about Conor Kennedy--here's a simpler verification. The pair were caught kissing on camera for the first time, on Friday in Massachusetts.

The cute couple--he's the 18-year-old son of Robert Kennedy, Jr. and the late Mary Kennedy--are discreet in the photos, displaying a demure rather than heated embrace. However, it's hard to deny they seem genuine. Kennedy particularly looks smitten as he nuzzles Swift's cheek, while she grins for the photographers and links her fingers with his.

Swift's been spending lots of her summer with the Kennedy family. After being incorrectly linked to another Kennedy kid, Patrick Schwarzenegger, it was quickly noted by several sources that she was actually serious about his cousin Conor. Earlier this month she purchased a Cape Cod mansion close to Conor's grandmother, Ethel Kennedy.

She appears to have the green light from the tight-knit Kennedy clan--both Ethel and Conor's aunt Rory Kennedy have spoken favorably of her, with Ethel even going so far to say that the clan would be "lucky" to have her as an addition.

In addition to her new romance, Swift is busy with plans for her fourth album, which will be released in October. Her first single from the set, "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together," debuted last week. It's expected to break numerous records as soon as final numbers are released for this week's sales.

Global 2012: Taylor Swift photographed holding hands with RFK Jr.’s teen son

Taylor Swift is having a summer of love! After incorrectly being linked to Patrick Schwarzenegger earlier this month, the country singer has been getting cozy with another member of the famed Kennedy clan: Robert Kennedy Jr.'s son Conor.

For the second time this month, the 22-year-old star was at the Kennedy compound in Hyannis Port, Massachusetts, for a weekend visit. Arriving via private plane on Friday evening, Swift spent the entire weekend with the 18-year-old curly haired, lookalike son of lawyer RFK Jr. and his late wife Mary Kennedy. The New York Post obtained a series of photos of the duo in which they are holding hands and acting lovey-dovey on multiple occasions.

According to the newspaper, Swift rented a small house on the Kennedy compound, but spent the majority of her visit in Conor's company. They attended a nearby house party, strolled on the beach, grabbed dinner at a local pizzeria, went sailing, and attended church service together. They were also spotted "playfully bouncing together on a trampoline with a large black dog."

This is the second time Swift has been seen hanging out with the famed family at their storied summer compound on Cape Cod. After Swift traveled there over the July 4th holiday, a photo of her hugging Maria Shriver and Arnold Schwarzenegger's 18-year-old son Patrick generated headlines, but Swift denied they were romantically involved. Conor, who is Patrick's second cousin, was also there that weekend.

Global 2011: 8 Taylor Swift vs. Blake Lively

Here we go again, fashionistas! Country music singer Taylor Swift -- known for her pretty, girly garb -- and "Gossip Girl" actress Blake Lively -- who happens to be the current muse of Chanel designer Karl Lagerfeld -- were both spotted wearing the same Tibi floral-print frock in slightly different shades this summer in NYC. The only question is ... who wore it better?

Taylor, 21, donned the dress in teal -- one of the season's trendiest colors -- while appearing at a New York radio station. The "Back to December" songstress completed her look with bow-adorned neutral shoes and a skinny metallic belt.

Meanwhile, Blake, 23, sported a cornflower blue version of the frock. Leonardo DiCaprio's reported leading lady accessorized with funky Charlotte Olympia leopard-print pumps and a green handbag as she promoted her movie "The Green Lantern" on "Today."

Global 2010: Beyonce Is Now and Will Always Be Richer Than You

Taylor SwiftCover of Taylor SwiftExtra! compiled the data from a few of Forbes magazine's lists of 2010's top-earning entertainment players to make their own countdown of who in Hollywood raked in the most money in the past year. The list is led, unsurprisingly, by Oprah with a 12-month total of $315 million. Slightly more surprising is the rundown of musicians who made the Top 20, with their respective rankings and cash intake: Beyoncé (Nine, $87 million), Britney Spears (13, $64 million), Lady Gaga (14, $62 million), Madonna (15, $58 million), Miley Cyrus (18, $48 million), and Taylor Swift (19, $45 million). That's six women, all in their teens or twenties -- save for Madonna, who celebrated her Sweet 16 Plus 36 this past summer -- who record pop music.
