Global 2011: Heiress leaves $40 million to PH-born nurse

SANTA BARBARA, CA - MAY 07: A woman plays wit...Image by Getty Images via @daylife
For the past several decades, Huguette Clark, a wealthy copper heiress, had largely been a mystery to the public. She cloistered herself in hospitals in New York, and saw only a small number of visitors. She had no children and no close relatives.

Her fortune was clearly huge—including a 42-room apartment on Fifth Avenue, an oceanfront estate in Santa Barbara, California, and a country manor in New Canaan, Connecticut—but her net worth was not clear.

So when Clark died last month at age 104, it naturally raised questions: How much was there to be inherited, and who would get it?

Some clarity was provided on Wednesday when a John D. Dadakis, a lawyer at the firm Holland & Knight, filed a will in Surrogate’s Court in Manhattan that Clark executed in 2005.

According to the will, Clark’s estate is worth about $400 million and is made up of an art collection with works by Monet, Renoir, John Singer Sargent and William Merritt Chase; her real estate and financial investments; and a vast doll collection, from porcelains to Barbies.

Clark’s nurse and close friend, Philippine-born Hadassah Peri, is the individual who will benefit most, according to the will.

Peri will get Clark’s hundreds of dolls, potentially worth millions of dollars. She will also receive 60 percent of the various assets, worth about $40 million, including investments and much of her real estate holdings, not specifically bequeathed in the will.

The 60-year-old Peri, an immigrant from the Philippines, had been randomly assigned in 1991 by an agency to take care of Clark. Since then, she saw the heiress every day for 20 years.

“I was her private duty nurse, but also her close friend,” Peri, a married mother of three, was quoted as saying through a spokesperson.

“I knew her as a kind and generous person with whom I shared many wonderful moments and whom I love very much,” Peri added. “I am profoundly sad at her passing, awed at the generosity she has shown me and my family.”

Global 2011: The Top 5 Killers of Men

COPD: Journal of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary...Image via Wikipedia
It was a sunny September day in the Pacific Northwest, and Jeff Hale had just closed a $1.5 million deal. To celebrate, he was taking the afternoon off, relaxing on his patio lounge, and playing ball with his dog. That's when he began feeling compression high in his chest, some pain in his left shoulder, and an unsettling sense of dread. At 44, he was in relatively good shape, although 15 pounds overweight and under a lot of stress from work. At first, he thought it was an asthma attack and took a hit off his inhaler. But when that didn't help, he remembered an article he’d read in Men's Health.

Global 2011: IPOs Boost Demand for Silicon Valley Mansions

A surge in wealth from technology stock sales and initial public offerings is spilling into the Silicon Valley real estate market as newly rich workers bid up home values in suburban cities south of San Francisco.

The median price of single-family houses sold in Palo Alto, home of Facebook Inc., climbed 20 percent in May from a year earlier to $1.63 million, the biggest jump since 2008, according to preliminary figures from research company DataQuick. In Mountain View, the base of LinkedIn Corp., prices rose 3.1 percent to $957,500, the ninth year-over-year gain in 12 months.

The advances are defying a U.S. housing slump that has sent national values to an eight-year low. Share sales such as the IPO of LinkedIn — which doubled on its first day of trading — and an expected offering from Facebook will fuel a boom in some Silicon Valley cities into 2013, said Kenneth Rosen, an economist at the University of California, Berkeley.

"It's just the beginning of the story and I suspect we'll see an explosion in the next couple years," Rosen, chairman of the school's Fisher Center for Real Estate and Urban Economics, said in a telephone interview. "You've got young people with real money, and it's not surprising they want to have a house."

Global 2011: Beauty queen caddies on PGA Tour

Shanbone post - Juliette Lewis, Alexander Skar...Image via Wikipedia
Admittedly, Kip Henley is bringing down the overall quality of the field at this week’s FedEx St. Jude Classic in Memphis. “Hey, it’s almost a miracle I’m in,” said the longtime caddie for Brian Gay. “Don’t laugh at my scores.”

But by accepting the automatic berth that goes to the Tennessee PGA Section champion, Henley is personally raising the quality of the caddie pool by miles. He’s signed up daughter Stormi Henley to be his caddie.

He knows you’ll go rushing to Google images, or perhaps You Tube for Stormi’s “American Idol” and “Miss Teen USA” performances, which is fine with him. The message is clear, especially to Henley’s fellow caddies: “I’ve told ’em all, you can look, but you cannot touch.”

Years before he jumped into the caddie business, Kip Henley was a club pro in his native Tennessee, then he tried to make it as a player.

He has maintained his Class A standing with the PGA of America for years, but figures he won’t put in the required hours to keep it, so why not go out with a vintage memory? Last fall, for reasons he still doesn’t understand, Kip Henley played in the Tennessee PGA Section championship, “even though I hadn’t broken par all year.”

Talk about the blind squirrel finding a nut. “I shot 10 under for 54 holes,” Henley said. “Like I said, a miracle. I stood on the 16th hole in the final round and made birdie on 16, 17 and 18, with my hands shaking.”

Global 2011: Miss USA Rima Fakih Under Fire For Behavior

Rima FakihImage via Wikipedia
According to Fox News, current titleholder Rima Fakih broke rules of conduct when she was suspected of sneaking out to party all night last week -- and then lied about it. The Miss Universe Organization, which rules over its winners with an iron fist, requested security tapes to judge whether a cover-up was in play.

"There was one night last week where she had some interviews the next day," says Paula Shugart, the organization's president. "First we thought she wasn't at the apartment (which she shares in Manhattan with Miss Universe), and someone (from the PR team) was trying to get her to the interview. She was sound asleep, and looked like she'd been out all night. She made the interviews, but we did ask about the security tapes, as it is a serious business especially after Tara Conner."

The striking 25-year-old will surrender her crown during the Miss USA Pageant on June 20. Given the personal restrictions that come with the gig -- you have to be on your best Kate Middleton behavior, at all times -- it might be a bit of a release for the fun-loving Fakih.
