Global 2013: Earth Safe from Asteroid's Close Flyby Next Week

An asteroid will give Earth a historically close shave next week, but there's no chance that the space rock will slam into our planet on this pass, experts say.

The 150-foot-wide (45 meters) asteroid 2012 DA14 will zoom within 17,200 miles (27,700 kilometers) of our planet on Feb. 15, coming nearer than the ring of satellites in geosynchronous orbit. While the flyby will be the closest ever known in advance for such a large asteroid, there's no reason to retreat to the doomsday bunker.

"NASA's Near-Earth Object Program Office can accurately predict the asteroid's path with the observations obtained, and it is therefore known that there is no chance that the asteroid might be on a collision course with Earth," officials at the space agency's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif., wrote in a statement Friday (Feb. 1).

"Nevertheless, the flyby will provide a unique opportunity for researchers to study a near-Earth object up close," the statement added. [Asteroid 2012 DA14's Feb. 15 Flyby: Fact vs. Fiction (Video)]

NASA will hold a press conference at 2 p.m. EST (1900 GMT) this Thursday (Feb. 7) to discuss the space rock's close flyby.

2012 DA 14 was discovered in February of last year by astronomers with the La Sagra Sky Survey in Spain. The near-Earth asteroid has recently been zipping around the sun once every 368 days, though next week's close pass will reduce its orbital period to 317 days, researchers said.

At its closest approach on Feb. 15, the space rock will be just 1/13th as far from Earth as the moon is. 2012 DA 14 will whiz by our planet quickly, zipping through space at about 17,400 mph (28,000 kph) as it makes its closest pass for at least the next 30 years.

The asteroid will present an intriguing target for skywatchers, becoming visible as a point of light through binoculars and small telescopes during the close encounter. The best observing will be from Eastern Europe, Asia and Australia, NASA officials said. (2012 DA 14 will have faded considerably by the time Earth's rotation brings the object into view for folks in the continental United States.)

Researchers at NASA and other institutions plan to take advantage of the flyby to learn more about 2012 DA14 and its orbit.

"Radar astronomers plan to take images of the asteroid about eight hours after closest approach using the Goldstone antenna in California's Mojave Desert, which is part of NASA's Deep Space Network," space agency officials wrote in Friday's statement.

Several other known asteroids have given Earth an even closer shave than 2012 DA14 will, but those objects were all smaller. Asteroids of 2012 DA14's size probably make such close flybys once every 40 years and actually hit Earth every 1,200 years or so, researchers said.

Of course, other relatively large asteroids have probably zipped very close to Earth recently without being spotted. Astronomers have identified more than 9,000 near-Earth asteroids to date, but perhaps a million or more such space rocks are thought to exist.

Global 2012: Justin Bieber And Selena Gomez Fail To Patch Things Up

They're off, then they're on...then off again? Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez just can't seem to make up their minds. After the young couple's split went public just a week ago, the pair attempted to reconcile a few days later--but then, apparently are on the outs again as of Friday night.

Okay, okay. Who can keep up with these crazy kids? Here's a quick rundown to what Bieber and Gomez have been up to since the breakup. On Tuesday, Bieber--apparently not thrilled about being dumped--landed himself a traffic ticket for speeding around West Hollywood in his Ferrari. He hopped on a motorcycle to show off some more on Wednesday, but then reportedly picked up Gomez from the airport that evening and spent the night with her.

Things must have gone well enough to schedule another date, for the pair were spotted at Los Angeles-area restaurant Yamato together on Friday night. However, according to People, the evening went sour almost before it even began. Five minutes after entering, Bieber and an angry-looking Gomez left, taking separate cars.

Global 2012: Tiger Woods' calm, clinical dissection of Olympic Club at the U.S. Open was a cool change

Under a cool blue-gray California sky on Thursday at the U.S. Open, Tiger Woods did the darndest thing. He played like Tiger Woods used to play at a major.

Gone were the pained expressions after mis-hits. Gone was the clank of a golf club banging off a tee box in a disgusted follow through. Gone was the muttered profanity.

In was a calm, clinical golfer. In was a player intent on a game plan, on calling the USGA's bluff and opting for fairway-pounding tee shots. In was a player thinking his way around the grueling Olympic Club setup, cagily eyeing each hole as if it were an adversary worthy of his best chess move.

Sixty-nine golf shots later, Tiger had his best first-round score at a U.S. Open since his 67 at the 2002 Bethpage Black U.S. Open. He won that U.S. Open.

The question: Who kidnapped the Tiger Woods who hasn't won a major in four calendar years, and replaced him with Tiger Woods?

Don't think the field didn't notice. Bubba Watson, whose first-round 78 smacked of surrender to Olympic's beastly demands, sure did.

"That was the old Tiger," he said, in gifting the media with Thursday's mission statement. "That was beautiful to watch."

Has Rihanna found love with a woman? "I'm on my first date in almost 2 yearz," the "Talk That Talk" singer tweeted on Thursday night — and then she showed up at Santa Monica, California, restaurant Giorgio Baldi hand-in-hand with a gal pal, Melissa Forde. After dinner, the ladies partied on at Hollywood nightclub Roxbury. Throughout the "date," Rihanna, who wore a long white flowy dress, kept her more than 17 million Twitter followers up to date on all the action with cryptic posts. In her first, along with a photo of herself and Forde cheek to cheek, she wrote, "My lover for the night." An hour later, she tweeted, "I'm not living right, if you're not by my side."

After multiple posts about 420 (slang for marijuana) and a photo of of stockings and garters under Rihanna's dress, she wrote, "Beautiful is great, submissive is even better," adding a hashtag that said #marryME." In a follow-up tweet, the 24-year-old quoted a Lil Wayne-Drake song, writing, "But she bad ... So maybe she won't ... But s**t, then again maybe she will."

Global 2011: How to ask a guy out

Cropped image of Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes. ...Image via Wikipedia
There’s no easy way to phrase this without provoking a barrage of “What are you, crazy?” emails, but here’s my theory: By the time she hits 20, even the shyest, mousiest, most un-Katie-Holmes like woman has developed at least a rudimentary strategy for fending off (or responding to) unsolicited come-ons by eager guys. But unless a guy happens to look like Viggo Mortensen, he can persist well into his 40s without once having been — flatly, out of the blue — asked out on a date. (After that, the odds tend to shift, as those handsome, hard-driving captain-of-industry types die off or get married, resulting in a surplus of on-the-prowl single women. Have I offended anyone yet?)

Anyway, whatever the explanation, the fact is that single women are more accustomed to being asked out, and single guys are more accustomed to doing the asking — which means there’s not a lot of data out there about how men like to be approached for a first date. With an eye toward correcting this imbalance, here are my observations about the best way to hit on a guy, whether it’s someone you work with, someone you’ve met online, or someone you’ve just rear-ended at a busy intersection.

  • Be direct.
  • Be indirect.
  • Come up with a plan.
  • Don’t come on too strong.
  • Don’t over-plan.

Global 2011: Homes With The Most Outrageous Amenities

Heisler Park, Laguna Beach, CaliforniaImage via Wikipedia
Whether a home is newly purchased or long inhabited, an updated kitchen, a new deck or even a coat of fresh paint can make it feel spiffier. When it comes to luxury real estate, however, some homeowners take upgrades to an extreme, spending big bucks on outrageous amenities.

The $10 million cliffside dwelling at Point Place in Laguna Beach, Calif., would make Bruce Wayne proud. The driveway has a secret, subterranean entrance below the house's steep perch, inside the cliff itself. Once a car passes through the hidden garage door, a commercial-grade hydraulic lift transports it up and into the house.

Global 2011: Scientists' amazing California discovery includes fishing tackle 12,000 years old

This Clovis point is from a period of habitati...Image via Wikipedia
Looking for signs of ancient human settlement, they unearthed meticulously-crafted spearheads and other tools that date back 12,000 years and provide insight into the lives of a seafaring culture that obtained bounty from the ocean.

The astonishing discoveries, at three sites on Santa Rosa and San Miguel islands west of Santa Barbara, strongly support the theory that during an era when the first traces of humans appeared in the archaeological record in North America, a coastal culture existed that was distinct from the well-chronicled inland Clovis culture, which consisted of big-game hunters who subsisted on mastodons and other large mammals.

A 15-member team led by Jon Erlandson of the University of Oregon's Museum of Natural and Cultural History found chipped stone tools, used for fishing and hunting, along with an abundance of discarded seashells and bones.

Manila 2010: Pinoy grad student in US faces deportation

Logo of ICEImage via Wikipedia
With the US Senate failing to pass a bill that would have legalized the stay of alien students there, a Filipino graduate student who finished magna cum laude from Harvard University now faces deportation. Arrested for being an illegal alien, Mark Farrales, 31, is hoping two senators and a congressman – all from California – will co-sponsor a private bill that could grant him citizenship, or at least give him more time to seek other means to stay in America. A Los Angeles Times report early this week said Farrales was arrested at his residence in Reseda in Los Angeles by the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The report quoted a US-ICE statement saying the immigration courts have “consistently held that Mr. Farrales does not have any legal basis to remain in the US." “He remains in ICE custody while the agency makes preparations to carry out the removal order," the ICE article added.

Farrales is currently detained at the Mira Loma Detention Center in Lancaster. He would have been a beneficiary of the Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors (DREAM) Act, a legislation that would have extended a path to citizenship to illegal and deportable alien students. The bill seeks to grant, among others, citizenship to foreign students who graduate from US high schools, who are of good moral character, who arrived in the US illegally as minors, and who have been in the country continuously for at least five years prior to the bill's enactment. Under the bill, qualified alien students may earn conditional permanent residency if they complete two years in the military or two years of a four-year program in an institution of higher learning. But the bill, introduced in 2001 and has been re-introduced in the US Senate since then, was subjected to a vote last December 18 and fell five votes short of the required 60 (55 to 41).

Global 2010: Jobs You Can Do From the Beach

Mi faccio suoraImage by narice28 via Flickr
It's that time of year again, a time for fir trees, twinkling lights -- and cursing yourself for not living in a warmer climate. So why not consider getting a job that you can do from the beach?

Not only are there a ton of tourism-related jobs you can do from the beach, but thanks to modern technology, anyone with a laptop and wireless Internet access can set up shop on the beach.

Real Estate Agent

At the beach: Of course you'll need to get licensed in that area, and you'll need to get up from your beach chair to show properties, but your cold calls and online listings could all be managed using a cell phone and laptop.

Entrepreneur

At the beach: The sun and crashing waves are a great way to clear and relax your mind, and get the creative juices flowing. If you have a laptop and a phone, you can do everything from research to calling consultants, writing out your business plan and figuring out a budget. Take the flip flops off for business meetings, though, OK?

Trader

At the beach: All you really need is your laptop. You can check company earnings statements and read up on the latest news about the company or fund -- everything you'll need to determine if it's a solid investment. Then, with your trading account, you can execute the trade and track its performance. When it comes right now to it, the only times you'd have to get up from your chair would be to get another drink or use the restroom!

Corporate Event or Wedding Planner

At the beach: You'll need an office, rather than a beach chair, as your home base for this job -- mainly to store files and product samples as well as to take meetings. But who says you can't have an office with a view of the beach? And stepping out for lunch just got a whole lot more interesting!

Vacation Home Caretaker

At the beach: This one isn't so much a job you do from the beach as a job you do from a luxurious beach HOUSE. Hey, if you're going to have to clean, shop and repair, might as well do it in style!

Data-Entry Clerk

At the beach: This may be one of those jobs that's better in an office overlooking the beach, since you may have a pile of papers or other material to be cross-referencing -- stuff you don't want blowing away!

Global 2010: Nissan Leaf runs equivalent of 99 miles per gallon

Nissan Leaf exhibited at the 2010 Washington A...Image via Wikipedia
WASHINGTON – The Nissan Leaf, an electric car aimed at attracting environmentally conscious motorists, will get the equivalent of 99 miles per gallon in combined city and highway driving, based on government testing.

Nissan Motor Corp. said Monday the Environmental Protection Agency's fuel efficiency window sticker, which provides information about the car's energy use, would estimate the electric car will achieve the equivalent of 106 mpg in city driving and 92 mpg on the highway.

Nissan will start selling the Leaf in California, Washington, Oregon, Arizona and Tennessee in December with a sticker price of $32,780. The Leaf will go on sale in other markets through 2011 and be available nationwide by the end of next year.

EPA calculated the Leaf's fuel economy based on a formula that says 33.7 kilowatts per hour holds the energy equivalent of one gallon of gasoline. The label estimates a charging time of 7 hours on a 240-volt charge. Cost estimates were based on 15,000 miles per year at 12 cents per kilowatt-hour.
